Subaru/Triumph Imprint

#1 Post by Aberdeen Sprinter » Fri Sep 08, 2006 1:52 pm

Right, here's one for you all.....

Recently located a cheap knackered old N plate Impreza WRX with knackered body (not crash damaged and 280 bhp engine though). Also I'm in possession of a rolling dolomite shell. Mate owns car resto business and does an interesting sideline in building "hybrid" cars.
Proposal is thus......cut the chassis out of the Impreza and attach it to the Dolomite body so in theory, we have Impreza chassis, engine, running gear 4x4 etc and Dolly Sprint looks.
Obviously that's rather simplified and of course there will be alot of re-engineering involved but we think it's quite possible.

Just a theory at the moment but the more I think about it the more it starts to appeal.

Or am I just plain crazy?

Dolomite looks good, my old impreza handled well (although I thought the chassis was a little prone to twist if you chucked it around too hard) four wheel drive on a dolly would be marvellous. I'd miss the twin carbs and the fixability but thats just me.

Much worse things have happened to them. Be nice if your rolling shell didn't have a great underneath to start with.....

Would that make it the 3rd fastest sprint in the country - when you have finished it?

(I think sprinteza sounds better - even if it isn't asprint shell!!)

1981 1500 HL -daily driver
1980 Inca Sprint - high days and holidays (and any other excuse)
1978 Inca Sprint Engine back in - timing perfect (had to phone a friend !) exhaust next then wire up the overdrive and its on the bay
1978 Yellow 1850 auto sprint-notvery-alike - nasty shunt - undecided
1973 Mimosa Sprint - sold, awaiting collection end of september

Dolomite Shell is ruined underneath, but surprisingly solid everywhere else. All for keeping them original but this would preserve the looks, just a "subtle" change of mechanicals.
Sprinteza, like that too.
Definitely do it. The only problem I can see is the width of the subaru engine between the two inner wings, but I think it would be a brilliant car.

Hmmm, thanks guys, Dave, totally agree about the width issue but I think the whole package of re-engineering is so huge that the re-working of the bodywork in the nose to accommodate the flat four lump will be just part of the challenge. Oh I'm REALLY starting to think about this now.....

Incidentally, ongoing projects in "Frankensteins" restorations at the moment are a Mk1 Escort with Honda S2000 engine and running gear, and a Mini clubman estate with a 180bhp 16v Honda VTEC. The man's a menace!!

Its going to need some work around the chassis getting it to fit in the Dolomite Arche's but anything is possible.
Or you could run Bubble arche's and leave the wide track.

Theres a Morris Minor that's been done like this running a Nissan power plant.
I think it sounds a wicked idea your mate who is doing all this conversion work sounds like a genius , so you should give the project the go ahead and also pay him more money that the job requires.... and then admit that Minis are the best cars ever..!!!!!! also the mear fact that some V8's have been done is why you shouldnt put one in...
