Gearbox troubles

#1 Post by 2F45T4U » Tue Sep 12, 2006 11:02 pm

Remember that thread I started on how great (but boring) my dads 15 year old Toyota was?

And do you remember when you lot diagnosed the problem on Rich's mates XR2 before the XR Owners Club?

Well my dads car is making an odd noise in 5th gear and only 5th. He was parked on an old garage foundation earlier that had a ramp up to it. He reversed up it fine but later on when he drove off it he clouted something on the underneath at the front.

He's smacked the underside on it loads of times as we have a drive way without a lowerd curb but the lowest part of the car that has taken a few hits is the exhaust down pipe. Next to that and not much further up is the diff casing/bottom of the gearbox/transaxle. That is covered in oil but always has been for years.

Is it possible its lost a certain amount of oil and now 5th gear isn't submerged in oil?

It sounds like a chattery type noise but isn't really that loud.

I'm off to oxford on Saturday and my parents are pricing up Rental cars!

Years of neglect have finally caught up with him. I think he has knocked something out of line internally. Probably be OK for another 100k knowing what jap cars are like. Get him to turn the stereo up if its a worry!
Scott did I tell you the story about my mum and dad in a car years ago with a flat tyre? My dad was driving and something started rumbling (flat tyre) and my dad turned the volume up

Or was it just a guess

If my car was taxed I could probably talk them in to driving that up But it isn't

Oh yer Rich that's what I wanted to hear but with a bit more technical jargon included, so my clue-less dad gets sucked in to dolly ownership

It didn't have much oil in it! It takes 2.6 litres and I put about 1.5 in! Much better

before the oil was topped up with the clutch up in neutral it would grind, doesn't do that either now...

Even got to drive the thing For a 2 litre 16 valve it didn't seem to pull much better low down than my 1850 but above 4000rpm (only took it to 4500, itll probably blow up!) it really starts pulling well. Whats the point in that, this car never gets revved harder than 3000rpm by my old man!

Japanese,

All Jap engines seem like that, my Honda is pretty gutless below 3k but once it`s gone past that it pulls like a train and the accompanying sound track is awesome.

The only reason they do it is to massage the figures for advertising purposes. The peak torque probably comes in at around 3000rpm or something which is a bit rubbish for normal driving, but looks great as a number in a magazine. Ditto the HP, which is probably measured north of 6000rpm.

vtec

you should try a VTec. They do nothing until you're way high on the tacho and then BOOM, massive big kick up the arse to lightspeed.

I wouldn't exactly say they do nothing, they do lack low down torque but are still pretty quick & once you hit 5000-6000 rpm (depending on model) they are very quick. As long as you then keep it in VTEC..... . My S2000 hits VTEC at 6000rpm & the max torque is at about 7500rpm...still 1500 rpm to go.
