That's because we have mostly advanced beyond the 'dirty' stage mate.

Richie being avionics doesn't get his hands dirty at all!

And probably like me, Richie spends more time entering data on a computer than doing the dirty stuff, or are you still on paper 700's?

You can't keep a good engineer chained to a computer desk, he has to vent his frustration somewhere!

90%

#47 Post by redrichie » Tue Sep 12, 2006 9:47 am

90% of my work is in an "engineering support" role. Liasing with civilian companies, scheduling shop floor loading plans, running our technical publications, and of course the paperwork. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:"> . Don't talk to me about the electronic 700 Al, I'm a bloody instructor for my sins.

I agree though, looking through the engineers we have on here, most of us seem to be a little bit further up the food chain than shop floor brew biatches, I guess we have to outsource to rusty old cars for our dose of spanner rash.

Just realised I made my job sound more interesting than it is. And I need a pay rise. Best I dig out Lizzys phone number and give her a shout.
F700 has gone on this we beastie and the new system is pretty good imo apart from when you have to invent a part number!
We do a lot of our own supply, demand, lifing, asset tracking as well as task capture and management...... blah blah blah So changing an LRI (line replacement item) might take five minutes real time, the data capture process can take upto an hour!
For all the rest of you tax payer's out there, this should improve as the lifing issues of componants improve.

Ah, multi nation product developement, you gotta love it!!!

So, yes my job is boring, very boring.

Jod, my good man pass me your truck the view from your office window is far more apealing.

Right, off to work for another 18 hr shift without overtime pay!
Biggest perceived problem with the forces is the complete inability of someone with half a brain to question the motive and reason of their upward chain of command.

As for those of you with a complete brain it must be hell!

I honestly would not go back to an office job now. Standing on Clee Hill in Shropshire last week, views from the Lickey Hills to the East, The Malvern to the South and into Wales to the West, looking down to the road in the distance, the truck parked at the roadside as big as my fingernail, gorgeous sunshine and fresh air and getting paid for the pleasure. What could be better?
#51 Post by straightsixuk » Tue Sep 12, 2006 8:33 pm

Gave up the stress of the auto industry and running a motor facrtors several years ago. Now i'm found clinking milk bottles in the early hours of the morning. I love it and also couldn't go back to office hours/meetings and staffing issues!!. Early start means early finish so as all the little worker ants are queuing up i'm on the otherside of the road sodding of home
. I have just found out my grandad used to be on the milk and had to look after his horse in a field down the road. My horse is called transit and lives on derv !!!!
...It's not the inability to question thats the problem. It's the fact that after years of never getting satisfactory answers, one tends to just not bother wasting time asking. Of course, this all depends on your chain of command and your direct supervisors. I suspect that this situation is not unique to the Armed Forces however.

The only thing we can do is learn from others mistakes and try not to be "that" type of leader when we ourselves get into the position where we can actually make the change for the better.

Probably too much to expect though, some of the most incompetent leaders in the British Armed Forces made it all the way to the top. Once again, I don't think this is unique to the Armed Forces, more likely it is a reflection of British society as a whole.

And for your reference to those with a complete brain....I haven't met any of those yet, and I do include myself in that....

Oi, Dolly Bird - I resent that - being ex RN myself! But there again, my previous job was at the RN Engineering College at Manadon in Plymouth as the "bar - steward" who told them when and where to sit for their exams. Knowing what they got up to while on course, some of them did need a good slappin'. Such power for a lowly CPO!

I'm currently manager of the Exams Office at the gool ol' Uni of Plymouth (scheduling exam sessions twice a year for some 10,000 future leaders of commerce & industry - God forbid!!).

Before that, and before Manadon, I was in the RN as a Telecommunications operative finishing as manager before
finally leaving the service in 1996 after 28 years.

Yup - always thought there must be a life out there!!
Did you know there are more RAF aircraft technicians serving on the carriers than Navy aircraft technicians.........

Did you know there are more RAF aircraft technicians deployed on 'live' operation's than the Army has aircraft technicians.......... And not just in the Technical role!
Al, those are lies, damn lies, and statistics.....

I don't think anyone would be surprised that the RAF had more Aircraft Technicians than the Army....

FWIW, when I was a newly promoted Cpl, I deployed with two Lynx on an exercise. Just me and my toolbox. An RAF Chinook turned up, full complement of 8 technicians (including a WO), spare aircrew, and a citroen 2CV in the back to take them to the pub. The WO asked where the other Army techs were, and where my boss was. I pointed to myself. We flew over 70 hours combined, whilst the Chinook could only manage about 30 iirc.

We all know how reliable Lynx are as well.

I still outdrank the crabs in the boozer as well. I did get a good report though, the Sqn OC was one of our jockeys, and he put a good word in for me with the Q man. . Probably half the reason I was only a Cpl for 2 years .
