Should I buy?
Should I buy?
Hi all
I have recently become interested in the Triumph Dolomite particularly the sprint and i was wondering if you could give me any advice.
I am 20 and an electronic engineering student at reading university and i think i can get together about £1500-2000 for a car the question is should i be conisdering a sprint.
Does any one have any idea how much the insurance would be, as at the moment im insured under my dads Nissan Primera 1.6 for just under £400(with SAGA)
What i want to know is if it would be viable for me to buy such a car as i plan to do general maintance myself and cover about 2000-3000 miles a year.
i would apreciate any advice you could put forward
Thanks in advance

Ivan

Re: Should I buy?
Dave W should give you some figures for insurance costs but unless you can get classic insurance (which i dont think you can at your age) it'll probably cost a fair bit more than the Primera even though its only a couple of insurance groups higher.

Before I had classic insurance my Sprint used to cost about £350 a year Third party fire and theft with about 50% no claims discount - this was about 5 years ago too.

On a more positive note you should get a nice one for the money you've got and its well worth it for Kudos when you compare it to all the Saxo's and Punto's your peers will be driving, and despite what you may have heard they aren't that complex to maintain.

Go on - buy one now!
At your age....
unless you can wangle some system whereby you are a named driver on a parents classic policy insuring a Sprint will be VERY expensive. We dont want to put you off....so think about a Dolomite 1850 instead.
My son drives one as a named driver non classic with norwich union and its not too bad. They discount it cos its old thought so go for an early one.
Its about 3/4 of a Sprint for 100 per cent of the time wheras a Sprint is only running 3/4 of the time despite what people on here tell you...:-)
I should know cos I've got both....
insurance isnt too bad in a parents name. im 17, and probably buying a sprint on saturday - insurance in my name would be about £2450 TPFT, in my mum's about £750 fully comp.

BTW, if anyone has any suggestions for insurance, i'm all ears!!

insurance
Bear in mind that insuring the car in your mums name with you as a named driver when in fact you are the main driver is slightly dodgy. They would be within their rights to refuse to pay out as you have not given a correct information for them to assess the risks.
It is also fairly obvious, how many sprints are driven by 40 year old women very few i'll bet quite a few by young men though!
I have never heard of them not paying in such a situation however, anyone know different?

Re insurance
Yes i have heard of an insurance company not paying out fully. My friend had insured his Corsa with his dad as the first driver, he wrote it off and they didnt give him what the car was worth. i thinkthey figured it out because the car was registerd in his name and the loan for the car was in his name. The insurance company payed off the rest of the loan or something to that extent
Re: Re insurance
That should sounds like typical insurance companies - they almost always offer less than the full value.

NEVER accept an insurance companies first offer! Unless of course they've cocked up and offer you too much!

Another benefit of classic agreed value insurance! There are some benefits of getting older!
Re: Re insurance
I just had a similar problem too. Some quotes are ridiculous.

Best was £650 fully comp, limited to 3500 miles. (footman james). thats with membership of the tssc (£30 membership, £16 car valuation).

The one i decided top go for was through chris Knott. they were really helpful. total was something like £970 3rd party.
why did i go with that I hear you ask? well chris knott allowed me to pay monthly (at an extra 17.5% !) but if i had to cancel i was entitled to a % of my premium back. i couldn't do that with footman james. thank goodness, i went with them as after less than 7 days i had to cancel and sell the car

i'm 21, no years no claims yet (just started on insurance), student, got part-time job, been driving for 4yrs. all these things add up. infact now i remember that i could only get insurance with Knott's if i provided evidence that i hadn't made a claim on my exisiting insurance (that isn't mandatory, just a bit of negotioation).

most companies are open to negotiation. just be cocky!

Hope that helps. if i can help anymore my mail is: paulkirkland42@hotmail.com

insurance
I am now 24, and have 5 years ncb.. hopefully 6 soon. No claims / convictions. my 1850 sprint thing was about 350 for the year. with liverpool victoria. A standard original sprint was about 450. FC is cheaper than 3rd party. In my name and adding a named driver my age or older reduced the premium.
I also found lancaster to be quite cheap. And norich union if u have a "standard" car. - no mods allowed.

Hope this helps?
David

oh.. and on the herald convertible.. they gave me 60 quid back changing from my 405,including adding g/f who is 19. -

Re: 40 year old female Sprint enthusiasts.....
My other half is coming up to that glorious age and she loves it (the Sprint that is). We just bought it out of winter hibernation last week. I maintain & wash it, she drives it & points out any faults in it.
Mind you it does have a bucket seat and zero suspension travel now!!

You bringing yours up to Coombe on the 26th Mart?
wives and their Dollies!
My wife has her own 1500SE- And she can't even drive yet..! Altho she does want to pass her test in the old girl(something about those sumptuous seats..!)
Insurance for her as a new driver would be ludicris, even on a classic policy, far better to go on mone as a named diver for about 30 quid...!
