First time buyer (sort of!)

Hi there, 
 
i had a Toledo when i was 17, and being 17 i treated it abysmally! the time has come to repent for my sins... i'm looking to buy a Dolly 1300 and treat it well to make up for my past misdemeanours! 
 
what sort of things should i be looking out for when i check over cars that i'm thinking of buying - any tell tale triumph danger signs or things i should be aware of??

Hello - my advice, from my limited experience is - take your time and have a DAMN careful look at the cars you inspect... I don't mean expect them to be perfect but look for serious corrosion, places where welding is necessary (unless you are handy with a welder!), under the wheel arches, the sills, the jacking points, around the A-posts etc., check under the carpets, they can hide all sorts, around the boot floor, bottoms of doors, suspension mounts etc. Take a nice big torch with you and don't be shy about asking to jack the cars up, take off the wheels if you fancy. Take someone who knows cars, preferably Dollys! 
 
And don't do what I did and get one with a knackered engine. It isn't a nice feeling my friend, although of course an engine is easier to replace than a body shell!

dont take this the wrong way, but make sure you have a drive. i let the man who sold me mine drive me around and then when i came to drive it found second gear was on its way out. katy.

Where abouts in the country are you?? 
 
I have an 1850HL auto with sprint wheels. Its brown, which is not to everyones liking. If your'e interested I will do you a very good deal. If you see the car and don't want it thats fine to. I will then show you all of the pitfalls when you buy a dolly. 
 
Either way I don't think you will loose anything, you may have something to gain.

BTW, Dolomites on Ebay,er,where've they all gone ?! 
Not one RWD model (i think)

Patience, patience, there'll be a couple I've "rescued" on there soon, just finishing some work on them and then putting 12 month tickets on them.

is nicer than a 1300. Mind you a 1300 is a willing little beast and better than no Dolly at all. I prefer HL modles cos the interior is much nicer. The 1300 does have the advantages of cheap insurance and ease of maintenance 
 
If you do a lot of town driving an 1850 auto is very nice. I know where there is a 30k mile white one with Sprint wheels in London too. Let me know if you are interested.

Neil - Rochdale is a bit of a mission to be honest, but thanks for the offer! 
 
and Jon - what sort of price is that 1850? i'm really only looking at using it to pop off for the odd weekend here and there so there won't be any serious mileage! i'd certainly be interested to get some details and have a look, providing i can snare a reasonable insurance quote!
