1850 HL approx values??

#1 Post by mr big » Wed Jul 16, 2003 10:23 pm

Having only owned my dolomite for the grand time of about 3 weeks, it now looks like a longer commute is going to force me to sell and run something a bit younger everyday.

Trouble is im not sure what its worth.......

1978 Dolomite HL, 4 spd no o/d, 46,500 miles from new (can supply contact details for both previous owners to verify this). 12 months MOT, 5 months tax, the only welding ever done on it to my knowledge was to repair a broken bonnet hinge for the MOT last week. Full rimmer bros stainless steel sports exhaust. Bottom of both front wings is a bit gammy, but not enough to fail an MOT, but two spare s/h wings supplied to use for repair panels. Spare carbs included too, interior is very good and the car looks on the whole very presentable, and is currently in daily use. The only other problems are the clutch not engaging fully occasionally (which I hope to cure by replacing the fluid and bleeding this weekend), and the rubbers on the front ball joints have perished (this was picked up as an advisory point on the MOT, but he couldnt find any play in them).

According the practical classics buyers guide this would be a condition 1 car and be worth about £1400, I have to say I believe its true value would be about £850-900, any thoughts please??

Thanks again,

Craig.

Why not fit overdrive, this will make it more comfortable and economical on long journeys.
Condition 1 1850 I would concur is worth £1200-£1400, how you describe the wings and the lack of overdrive would reduce this; neither are particularly problematic to rectify, but few would be inclined to buy a car with a view to doing the work. I guess I also concur therefore with your own valuation, but at the same time it is only worth what someone is prepared to pay. Everyone will try to negotiate the price too, some moreso than others (eh Jon?) so factor in a haggle margin, say 10%.

Are you near Manchester? If so and if it ain't brown why not have a chat to Magatsu as he's looking for one.......

Gammy wings...

Its not worth more than eight mate....
O/d was a factory option but is easilly fitted if you can find one. Id possibly be interested at four, fit o/d and sort the scab and sell it for eight, if I wasnt doing about four others. Its a sad fact of life that nobody really wants them. I love em....
Values

Its worth Nowt Mate. you will just have to do what every Dolly owner has to do and explain to the wife that you are stuck with it. You have entered the darkside, a world where time stands still. You fell into the pit and bought the car. The car will be with you till you Die.

Beware of the Devil (Jon Tilson) before long he will be around like the reaper offering to take it from your hands for gratis, to be sold to the next unsuspecting punter who will enter the twighlight zone.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Seriously, as John says advertise it but don't expect a stampede at the door they are uncool to the kids and unreliable to the uninformed. if you don't want to commute in one, then neither will your average punter.

My experience tells me that they don't change hands for more than £5-600 unless they are virtually show vehicles.

Good luck.

Neil.

PS I have found a cool workshop for mine to be finished in, all rent free.

Wow!! I've had a mention in TWO threads !!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin">
Seriously though, Coventry is a little out of my limited range.
For the sake of conversation though, I would have offered around £900 (tops).Classics "condition 2" is bang on what I'm after. Overdrive would have been nice but can't be too fussy right ?
What did you pay?

#9 Post by Jon Tilson » Thu Jul 17, 2003 11:53 pm

As you've only had it 3 weeks what did it cost you?
You should be able to get your money back. Ebay is a possible outlet and you dont have a lot of comeptition at the mo.
You could always keep it as a reserve classic for when the modern inevitably breaks down.
Uncool to the kids?

#10 Post by alun n » Fri Jul 18, 2003 12:38 am

Jarvis Cocker had one, a brown one infact and his quote about it in the press caused quite a stir when I sent it to PE and it was susequently reprinted it in an issue of DM. Apparently he thought it "cool in a **** off kind of way". Caused a few 'letters to the editor' the next issue! Made me smile at the time as it was possibly the only input they had ever made to the Club.

A Blue 1300 Dolly has just appeared in autotrader. Guy is in Liverpool. He is prepared to take reasonable offers as needs to get car off drive. from his description it sounded quite good.
The drummer of a well known "gothic rock band" (had a top 40 hit many moons ago) also had a Dolly (or three),which was mentioned in the sleeve notes of one of their albums. The fact that younger people are now taking an interest in these cars (possibly in part due to the information available on this forum and on the main website?) can only be a good thing.
As I've said so many times before, the secret of keeping these cars on the road is making sure that spare parts are available and also by raising the profile of the car.If Dolomites are seen to be "cool",then more people (especially younger people) will buy them.More people buy the cars, more spare parts will be needed to keep them on the road.More spare parts sold, more will be manufactured.More parts available, more cars kept running.
How do we raise the profile of the cars? Well for a start we can attend more shows, tours, rallies and races etc.We need to make sure that magazines are well fed with info about our cars (the club is already doing quite a lot on this front).I'm sure there are lots of other ways in which we can get our cars into the limelight, any suggestions welcome.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
Lemmy Kilminster (Motorhead) had a brush painted matt black TR7 in the late seventies. I saw it once in Kensington High Street. Had a badly drawn picture of their logo on the bonnet. Perhaps thats why BL stopped making them.......

........or was it because they were crap?

At twenty two your are very definately a "kid" <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">
Dave (51)
ps my 23 year old daughter is chewing my ear cos dolly has not passed MOT yet !! She is looking forward to driving it, and thinks its a real head turner.

As for raising the profile of the dolly, I tried to book mine in for next years Rempstone Steam Fair (classic car section) and was told that my '78 1850hl was "not old enough" !!!! Now that did NOT please me.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">
