Hmmmmmm...

...can I get insurance for a Sprint.....??
£65 a month for an 1850 in normal use with a year and a half no claims. So, if I get a lock up, get mega limited mileage, don't buy any anything (bar car stuff) for a year, turn round touch the ground and say bagsy, maybe I could just make it.
That local white one on e-bay with a starting bid of £500 and no takers has got me thinking.....

£500 White Sprint
If you didn't feel inclined to finish Neil's car (which looks superb on the latest photo Neil - and well worth £600 IMHO) I would steer clear. This looks more of £100 donor vehicle to me and you aint going to restore a car like this or most of the sheds on e-bay for less than the price of the finished item!
I get the feeling you are more of a tinkerer than a restorer so your best bet would be to borrow £2k from Tesco , buy a mint Sprint and be done with it. It'll be far less hastle, cheaper in the long run and you can enjoy it straight away. If you buy an 1850 you'll always wish you'd bought a Sprint.

Stop dithering, look further afield and get one bought.
Dithering?!!
I wish my situation would allow me to be more straight forward in my choice of vehicle.
I take it you had a look at that car in stockport ?
I had been toying around with the idea of a loan, but wasn't too keen.I may have to reconsider.
I can afford Sprint insurance BTW (woohoo!!).
Cars / insurance/ dithering
Me thinks you need to come down to earth with a bump my boy.

Sprints can be had, but with your budget you will be advised to steer clear. an eight hundered quid sprint will often be the equivalent of a £250 low rent model. I am not saying that bargain cars don't exist, but gone are the days when you could buy a structurally sound sprint for less than a grand. If you are paying this sort of money you will be buying problems. expect to replace sills and jacking points plus rear arches.

Sprint owners know what they can get for their cars and that is precisely why they sell for £2000 plus for a good un.

As said previously you have talked the subject to death. you need to jump in with both feet and buy a car.

the auto trader website has 14 cars advertised, ranging from £250 - £3750 http://www.autotrader.com.
their are 2 1850s within your budget, 2 sprints for £2000, one only 24 miles away (beat me to it if you can)
plus lots of low rent cars.

stop dithering, decide what you want, how much you want to spend, how much work you want to do or pay someone to do and stick to the plan. you have the rest of your grown up life to graduate to a sprint, so start sensible, but start. If you want help and an honest opinion I am sure that Alun, Jon and myself will be more than prepared to view the fodder with you, dependant on its location.

stop dreaming and stick to your objective.
Look?
No, the e-bay pics and description say it all. I've owned and worked on old cars for the past 20 years. The description is always better than the car! "Surface Rust" means rot. "Surface rust that has taken hold" means rot and big gaping holes etc. The mechanics are probably not much better.
Believe me, the car is a money pit and not worth the effort. People will always buy rubbish if it is cheap enough, this unfortunately looks expensive rubbish to me and is why it has 2000+ hits and no bids.
My advice would be to go to meets, talk to some owners who are NOT selling, look at lots of cars and buy only the VERY BEST that you can afford - after someone impartial who knows these cars has looked it over.

Good Luck,
My take...
Buy the best 1500HL you can find (no more than 500)and run it on cheap tax and insurance. Try and find one with overdrive. Then get a TR7 engine of ebay and an 1850 sub frame from me or Alun. Then pay me to convert it and you will have one very sweet and reliable Dolly that is 90 per cent of a Sprint for 50% of the money.
A car is ALWAYS worth more to its owner than anyone else. Everyone is disapointed with what they get when they sell it. Conversely everyone always thinks they paid too much when they get to know a new purchase. At least I do! Enthusiasts are probably the worst people to buy a car send along someone without an interest.......

I appreciate....
you're thoughts/comments/observations, that's why we have a forum (of course). That's also why I "pop in" most days.I also appreciate that my opinions won't be worth all that mich untill I do finally get a Dolomite.

So far I've looked at 2 cars. One an 1850 auto, the other a 1500 neither of which match my want add. I'm also awaiting a response of a third (another auto). The fact most of my mates/family don't drive (and my no longer havin' a car) means arranging to view cars outside of the bordering counties is VERY hard arrange.Time is also a problem.
A Sprint would have been nice, but I suppose there is no rush.Blame that pipe dream on inpatience.
Have you spoke to Dayle Perry about gettin' a meet arranged Neil ?
And where those 2 1850s ? I've looked on the A/Trader site.
Pete.
It's that old saying again
You pay for what you get. I've just payed 4k!! (yes 4k) for my sprint and you know, she is worth every penny! She is now guaranteed (agreed with insurance company) for 5k! she's even in better condition than my year old car! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

I get a buzz driving her and I love the way people stop me in the street!!
Andy,
Says he has all the MOTs (& equivilants?) from new.He also said it he was the second or third owner from new.
Dave,
The car's a brown auto, the two things I'm keen to avoid.
I'm not sure if I'll have a look just yet (should I buy a car I don't like ? may as well get a mk2 fiesta <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/grin.gif ALT=" >D"> )
I don't tend to bother talking money on the phone, hard to tell a car's value without seeing it.
Is that the green auto you're talking about BTW ?
