C'mon you southerners...

#1 Post by alun n » Tue Sep 27, 2005 11:23 pm

...I'm rising to the challenge of the Bidford one; who is going to take on this one? We could have a restoration race, get it in the magazines on telly etc etc

That's a good idea, a telly prog with a fit bit of stuff with a short skirt and microphone to commentate. Soon everyone would want one! Get the rights to the book of the series just before Christmas and get BBC to fund the projects<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
I viewed this car earlier on today.

It is just about a viable project for any normal person who has not been touched by the Nicholas brush of slight Dolomite Hoardomania (meant in the nicest possible way, Al).

So here goes...

Drivers side front wing sound and solid and signs of some repair work beneath. Upper front panel salvageable (one tiny hole), lower front panel like a lace doily. All doors rusty rears worse - one spare good rear door included. Interior predictably tatty though no actual damage and would clean up, eventually and with hard work. Rear screen pillar offside holed in three places. Alloys okay. N/S front wing rotted away and removed. Inner wing mostly sound. Boot floor amazingly good. Passenger footwell good (!), drivers shot and badly holed. Chassis rails poor (n/s best - may be saveable). Both sides inner and outer sills shot to buggery - passenger side B piller is waving in thin air making both doors stick in their apertures. All suspension, brakes predictably shot. New rear spax included with car. Engine turns freely with spanner on alternator or bottom pulley.

The car last ran ten years ago (owner has had 12 years). It was then "put away" to await re-build that never happened. It has NOT been out in the open (only dragged out for photos) but has been in a dry barn - hence not as bad as it might have been.

I think a grand and a lot of time and effort could bring this one back to a good MOT'd condition. If you are paying someone to do the bodywork and welding at least 2.5 times that figure. This assumes with oil change and new ignition side etc that engine is okay (head was re-built just before lay up).

It is not quite as bad as it looks but nevertheless is only for the brave- hearted.
