A beautiful powerplant.

I reckon the 2.2 or 2.3 from the Prelude would be nicer in a Sprint though, with some JDM tuning parts they make absolutely stunning engines.

Just a shame there's no RWD boxes for them <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">
I think the Prelude ones are no good for rwd anyway - dont they spin the wrong way?

Yea like I said - No rear drive boxes as far as I know.

Doesn't stop you putting it in the back though <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Yes- I've thought about MX5 conversions too, nice 160BHP quite easily from something like that, would be a tasty conversion, lovely gearboxes (well, in the one I drove).

Or BMW 318iS engine and box - 130BHP, 1.8 litres, 16 valve, excellent piece of engineering.

Are you sure Lewis, I thought these had more head problems than the Sprint engine (not that the Sprint head has a problem)...I could be wrong.

Lewis - Rover K Series. 1.8, 16 valve, much better piece of engineering than the German engine. Plus it suits your name...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Well, they do and they don't.

There are numerous people who have issues with headgasket problems (ie, they go all the time) - but these are easily fixed.

The problem was with, in the case of the Lotus', thermal shock due to the radiator being far from the engine so when the thermostat opened cold water would be dumped in (or something, can't remember quite?)

With the Freelanders & Rovers it was usually due to poor maintainence - as soon as the coolant level drops below acceptable on the K series it's game over. Plus they used those dodgy head studs, much better replacements are availiable now.

In PPC there are many racers praising the K series who run them race after race, with the Longman K series, or Scholar conversions, making them 1.9's, making up and over 200BHP and totally bulletproof.

But yes, they did have their problems. No more though (hopefully!)

Ah I see... rather like the Sprint then ie. cooling system not being looked after.

It doesn't really have a proper head, as the engine is cast in 4 separate lumps. It's also machined to amzingly tight tolerances from the factory.

Bollocks...

#13 Post by Jon Tilson » Tue Mar 07, 2006 5:40 pm

I dont often disagree with Lewis quiet so violently but in this case I have no choice....

The K series is indeed a sweet lump when running well but almost every one I know is on its 2nd or 3rd head gasket AND set of long bolts at 45 quid a go! Right PITA to do as well cos the manifold bolts make the Sprint zorst ones look a doddle in comparison.

Won't ever do one again and its an I'll never own one again engine afaic...

Sadly the BMW engine is vastly superior....

what ever happened to the days of Rolls merlins...

I suppose the AJ16 is a decent british lump....but a bit big for a dolly.

Nah, I think disagreeing's fair enough. A lot of people have bad, others have good <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Like you said and me in my post, the BMW 4 would be what I'd go for first mind <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Very harsh mate!!!!
Even worse than me!
I believe there was a dowel for locating the head gasket correctly which on early engines were made of plastic!!!???
I F**King ask you!?
Which in later engine's were replaced for aluminum (american spelling -they invented it after all!) ones, thus curing the problem.
