Blue Sprint on E-bay - Hands Off! (Pretty Please!)

#1 Post by dollybird72 » Sun Mar 12, 2006 9:34 pm

Good evening <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

I really, really want this one.

Anyone know anything about it or seen it advertised before?

As Alun is on holiday, can anyone else think of anything I should be aware of or ask the seller?

Cheers <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
Has the seller got a parrot on his shoulder? Look at the shadow!
I don't think the engine would be too much of an issue, they are quite easy to fix if you know the right man. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> .

Main things are rust, rust and rust.

since neither of the pictures are close ups, I'd want to make sure that there was no rust in:

The bit above the rear windscreen, where the vents are,
Underneath the windscreen,
in the pillars behind the windscreen just where the bend is,
and in the back of the front wheel arches,

as these are either nasty places to weld, or will mean there's something nasty behind them (holes in the back of the wheel arch will usually mean a sill is needed that side)

The advert says the car needs an exhaust for the MOT. Looking at the side on picture, it doesn't look like it actually has an exhaust at all.

The car looks like it has been lowered, so check that the front wheels don't foul the wheelarches when the steering wheel is turned. If you can, look at the sump and make sure it's not been bashed on any speed bumps.

I'd guess it would need trailering from bedford, unless it is an easy MOT job and someone in the area can get it sorted for you.

Pieces of eight!

If you are really keen Suzie, I could take a drive over and have a look for you. Might be able to get some better pics for you.

Looks like you have caught Alun's OCD (Obsessive, compulsive, Dolomitus.)!
What's wrong....

#6 Post by Jon Tilson » Mon Mar 13, 2006 11:51 am

with your green 1850 and the purple round wheel arch thing? Where are you going to keep them all?
Or is this just the daily driver and out the micra?

Believe Alun and me....it IS possible to have too many dolomites. Nip the proliferation tendency in the bud before you go too far else you'll have 5 before you know it. You reach critcial mass and people start giving you free ones then you are really in trouble.

Leave it...just be patient til your purple one is fixed.
for the advice.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Jon, magenta one is in a bit of a state - it will be literally be years probably before that is restored to former glory. Alun is doing it for me but he just hasn't got the time.

My 1850HL I think just needs the welding doing to the underneath (where the jacking point was!) to get it to pass the MOT. Needs a couple more bits doing to get it really neat and tidy but nothing major. Again, people are really busy and I can't weld myself (Susie & power tools don't mix!) LOL!

I am going to sell the Micra in the condition it is in now. Alun suggested I insure the 1850HL as my main car and if I get a Sprint, insure that one as a classic car.

Nothing wrong with my 1850HL, I really like it, though Brooklands green wouldn't have been my first choice colour-wise. I am just impatient and want a Dolly on the road like yesterday!

As it happens, I have space for about 4 or 5 cars at my mom's house....................

Seriously though Jon, I will give what you have said some thought. The blue one looks so nice though.........................
Buy it and fill the space up before Alun does it for you...

arf arf...

Hasnt Alun got a daily driver you could have for a while?

Its a long way away and you know enough by now to realise that buying blind isnt something you do with a dolomite sprint.

I'll have a good russet one soon...

I'd still let Gary have a look at the Micra. Send me the pics...go on...you know you want to...
Serioulsy...

#9 Post by Jon Tilson » Mon Mar 13, 2006 4:11 pm

This has been off the road for ten years and is in no way street legal. Given Alun's workload and rate of progress on the current projects, which is good but hardly lightening speed...how much time do you think he or any of his local team have to sort this for you.

If its as good as he says it is...ask the question. WHy not buy an exhaust and MoT it and sell it as a good car?
I would....

When my brown one is done paint wise it will be used for a month before I let it loose on the public. It will then be sensible money and a good sound buy.

Thats the sort of car you really want in your situation...not another half done resto project over enthusiastically described and being a Sprint actually probably quite dear too.

Its okay paying a ton for a decent 1850 that wants a cill done. But thats now taken you 3 months....
Its quite another to pay nearly a grand for a Sprint needing just as much work that could well be round our neck as a non runner even longer.

Just go in with your eyes wide open. I reckon in your situation you want an up together car with a full ticket in regular use...
You may be more but its a lot less hassle...

Here is the response I had from the seller: -

"Theres some rust above the back screen, under the vinyl, theres not much else rust on it, its not totally immaculate but its in good nick overall. it has spax adjustables on it, I think it might have been lowered but the wheels dont foul the arches".

He didn't answer my question about the exhaust though.

Let us know what you make of it once you've seen it.
#12 Post by dollybird72 » Wed Mar 15, 2006 10:58 am

Forgot to say a big thank you to Dave for advice on questions to ask and to Scott for very kind offer of going to look at the car. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Jon is probably right (I hate it when I have to admit a man is right!), I could do with a car that is MOT'd and doesn't need anything doing to it. I just don't want to pay through the nose for one though.

Alun did say I could borrow KDU soon.

Thanks again <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Susie

PS Jon, will sort the pics of the micra out to send to you. Is your brown/russett car a Sprint? If so, can you PM me with a ball park figure of what you might be asking for it?

Sorry Susie but I cant email you during the day...

So I'm not allowed to say on here that the brown Sprint will when finshed in a month's time be 1500 quid.

Would a deal with the micra be of interest?

If so I could always move the brown sprint up Gary's queue, bust a gut and have it ready for early April?

Borrowing KDU will be much cheaper....
I feel (slightly) guilty now !!!

#14 Post by Dolly Bird » Wed Mar 15, 2006 5:47 pm

Susie,

I feel ever so slightly guilty now that I've only been looking for about 3 weeks and I've found a good dolly (I hope!) already!

Sorry <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":">
Ah, no need to feel guilty Debbie, I have an 1850HL in fairly good nick. In fact, the inside (once dusted and hoovered) is in almost showroom condition. I just need a bit of welding doing to get it MOT'd.

My dream Dolly though would be a white Sprint. I will keep looking!

BTW, bet you are really excited about this weekend? I can't wait to see the pictures of your new baby. Decided on a name yet?

My 1850's reg is VGK 45W - can't make a lot out of that - other than 'Very Gorgeous Kittens' (very apt as I have 5 cats!) Hmm, might have to do a re-think on the name!

Don't forget those photos! Once Alun comes back I'll see if I can post some piccies of VGK.
