What's My Dolly?
What's My Dolly?
So I bought a job lot of Dollys (well 2) on ebay. One of them is easy to identify, the other one less so. I have had some advice about its age (thanks Mark) as pre 75, but I'd really like to tie it down further than that. Its a yellow sprint, black roof, black interior, no headrests, single/large rear number plate light, wing rather than door mirrors and the less robust under riders.....anything else to look for (needless to say there are no distinguising marks in the shape of chassis numbers etc)

I can't even find the engine number, or I'd write to the heritage people..

Here's hoping....David

Re: What's My Dolly?
Are you saying it has no chassis number? The vin plate is on the nearside inner wing. That would give a clue. Mines a '74 on VA5509. If there's no chassis number its only worth parts value. What about the V5?

Engine number wont tell you everything as the chances of a pre 75 Sprint still having the original engine in are fairly slim unless its a low mileage car.
Whats My Dolly
Yep, thats about the strength of it. No V5, No Reg number, No Chassis number. Runs well, and I took it for an MOT last week and it only failed on a couple of things. Seems a shame to break it up for parts. 77,000 on the clock and at some point someone has obvioulsy cared for it, nicely welded, tidy underseal, stainless steel exhaust that sort of thing...

Re: Whats My Dolly
how did you managed to get it mot'd with no reg no. and chassis no.?
Whats My Dolly
Got it MOT'd at a 'local' garage. Pre Mot'd would be a better description. Sorry if that was misleading. I was trying to get an idea on whether it was worth doing anything with before I broke it up or used the shell as a donor for another one.

Potentially...
its stolen....

Sobering thought. If you want some more help on here I suggest you tell us a bit more about how the previous owner came by it. I know you probably bought it in good faith but you do lead yourself open to all kinds of suspicion from Mr Plod.

Its unlikely DVLA will let you register it with no identification at all. The least likely component to change on a Sprint is the diff. This will have a number and maybe traceable from the Heritage people.

As to age, well there are some marks on window glass that can give a clue.
Re: Whats My Dolly
I don't know if it helps but I noticed a VA number stamped into the o/s gearbox bell-housing area of my car the other day. Only noticed it as the gearbox tunnel was off.

Other than that, I might be able to help you out. My racer was a yellow 79 car that will never go on the road again. I don't know you but would feel more comfortable about offering that level of assistance if it was to a fellow club member. In the interests of keeping a good car on the road of course.

Scott

Edited just to say that I think Jonners point about it being potentially nicked should be ruled out first. What did the PO tell you about it's history? Would seem unlikely that a well cared for car would lose its id.

Whats My Dolly
I suppose its a fair point that it may be stolen, Obviously I hope not. The two cars have been bought and sold on ebay 3 times now I think. I think the expectation was that the reconditioned engine and overdrive from the second / other car was reshelled into the yellow one.
Its on ebay still 4637050761.
Re: Whats My Dolly
I have had a look at some other postings. I guess I am most interested in working out how old the dolly is and what it is. I can't find that engine number although I have looked all round the carbs and, well all round the engine. I can't find it on my other engine either, so its either hard to see if you don't know where to look or missing (unlikely I guess?)

What marks should I look for on the window glass, it says Triplex toughened sundym. Then a kitemark with T on the left and F on the right. Then a wiggly line and D212. This is underlined and DOT 17 - M22 - AS2 is underneath that. Any help?

Re: Diff Number
I have checked the diff as well. It looks like 301603 is the number. The number is on one side as the diff joins the axle / half shaft...
