Window Dots

#16 Post by David6214 » Tue May 30, 2006 12:13 pm

Thanks very much Julian.

It has a dot under the U of toughened so 1973 and depending on which glass I look at it either has two dots over the T or 1 dot over the x (I double checked that one, that was the windscreen). Everything has one dot under the U of toughened (except the rear screen which has a suppliers sticker over it - I have checked - I don't think they are there anymore).

so May 1973....

Re: another sticker

There is a sticker next to the place where the original VIN should be. Its silver and contains a table headed up E11 and a E2. These have a series of numbers underneath them. This has not been tampered with at any time. Be nice if this was useful in some way.

Good sleuth work, but it only dates the glass; most alloy wheels have casting dates of 1973, 1975 or 1979. things were made in batches those days, not like the 8 week lead in we are expected to suffer today (purely because everything is made abroad now and they know us Brits will wait patiently; order the same thing from a French address and you get it in a fortnight!)

The axle number is stamped on the flat underside of the casing and reads front to back; it will be prefixed 'VA' and have any number of digits following between 1 and 5 in number. If it has been changed for a leter item it may just have an 'S' suffix. Generally axle numbers are within 100 numbers or so of the engine/VIN, but again cannot be definitive.
I'll mail you back shortly David...

Wheels

#19 Post by David6214 » Tue May 30, 2006 3:35 pm

The Wheels are marked E73, rather than 1973. The mark is on the outside.

It also has the original (I think) MW and LW radio in it and a black switch like thing to the right of the radio. It pulls out, has a bulb in it but doesn't seem to do anything. It also has seatbelts which have a second piece of webbing (sort of) coming off of them with the metal clip on that rather than the newer ones where the metal piece is directly on the seatbelt

the heated rear window. Its actually red. This I believe makes it an early 1850 as I thought even the earliest sprints had the hrw switch on the dash.
If yours has a dual seatbelt box in the middle rather than the stalks that also confirms it. Other early 1850 pointers would be the centre roof light rather than at the side and all white screen visors and the pull down springy grab handles.
So what is it then? Early Sprint, Re-shelled 1850....this is quite intriguing...Puzzled that there is no visible Engine number though....haven't looked at my engines for a while (We're not speaking) but seem to recall the number stamped on the block on all 3 of them.
more details then - seems to be coming clear.

#22 Post by David6214 » Tue May 30, 2006 4:58 pm

Thanks very much one and all for your help.

It has the interior light on the side (although pull back sunroof would necessitate that) loopy grab handles, a centre dual seatbelt holder and white visors.

I has sprint badges in all the right places, but I guess anyone can put those on, a sprint spoiler (same argument applies)

So an early 1850 then. I really must find that engine number!

Its not an early 1850 on that basis; pre '75 Sprints were exactly as described; seat belts, HRW switch etc etc. I'd say its simply a Sprint that has lost its numbers...its definitely a Sprint engine. The load balance valve mounts would confirm one way or the other but still not give it provenance. the sticker intrigues me as I only recall these from later cars...

The body tag plate; body coloured and long with rounded ends might help if its there, but I know of no-one who can cross refer...

if you are interested, I have stuck it on the bay...4645307847. It might be easier just to get a known item. Anyone got a nice MOt'd sprint they'd like to sell me?

numbers

Its definitely pre 75, Mark Ashbridge confirmed that early on. There are no numbers in the boot surround / well. I think we have it as 73/4 now. With the likelihood being that it is a sprint. I think contacting old owners of the other car is probably most likely to heed a result now. fingers crossed.

You are correct. There are no numbers for the yellow one.

The white one has plates, VIN and V5 with it the yellow one doesn't.
My sprint which is chassis no 664 has the pull out RHW. as fr as I was aware, this was the case until the face lift, when they put in the pull hazard swich too. As for seat belts, fairly sure mune has been changed at sometime as stalks have indicators on them for seat belt warning. As for engine nos, dont hold your breath, they are really hard to find and if I recall, can be wiped off with a good skim!
