Re: vermillion sprint
I went for a look at it yesterday. The current owner picked it up from the dealership where he worked for £1500 way back when. It belonged originally to a couple who had a matching pair, his 'n hers Vermillion Sprints - nice. When the husband died she traded the pair in for a metro. What can one say about that!

Anyway, before I start on a description of the car lets get one thing straight. I will be concentrating on what's wrong with the car rather than what is right. This is not because I'm trying to talk down the value so I can buy low, it's simply because I don't want to be here all day. Besides, I rather expect that the reader of a Dolomite forum already knows what the good bits of a Dolomite should look like. OK?

First impressions of the car are very good, It's clean, tidy, the paintwork is bright & even and the chome is shiny. Underneath is a car in danger of suffering from its chronic lack of use. Prior to May the car was last MOTd in 2001. Since then is has covered just two miles to this years mot and back. Whilst all the outer shiney surfaces remain the way they should the surfaces that don't get polish are suffering. I found some scab:

Behind front bumber below OS lights.
Rear of front panel.
Inner front panel.
Around suspension mounts, front.
Ususal spot in door gap at the bottom of the screen.
Vertical surface inside door bottoms outside the seal (all doors).
Under the bonnet seal forward of the channel.
underside of the bonnet around the strengtheners.

This is all what I'd call deep surface rust. No holes yet but the surface under the loose paint will be well pitted, beyond what filler primer will deal with.

There is also some less deep rust on the black surface of the bootlid and around the lip of the bootlid. The entire underside is virtually unprotected now but I didn't see any bad rust. A bloody good brushing and re-treatment are all thats needed.

The front end of the cills was fine. I forgot to check inside the rear arches. The only bad rust I found was at the bottom of the OSR arch as seen from inside the boot, I think a repair will be needed. Easily the biggest uh-oh moment was reserved for the cills. Both look very clean and tidy with no rust visible. However, both have cover cills fitted. Not replacement outers like the club or rimmer items, covers. Yuk. The welds along the lip are virtually untreated. The return in the drivers door was nicely done, didn't check the others. From the look of it the car hasn't seen any rain since they were fitted so the water trap still awaits filling. The owner thinks from memory these are 15-18 years old. There was also sign of respraying around the front screen on the NS. I'm not sure how much has been sprayed. I suspect it might be the entire NS front as there was sign of lifting orange paint with orange underneath around the NS front panel slot. The owner also revealed that the bootlid has been resprayed.

I saw a small ding below the aerial, the paint is intact. I'm told there's another somewhere but didn't look.

Mechanically it seems not to have suffered too badly. Back in the days when it was getting used it got replacement leads, the OD was replaced due to slipping and the water pump was done once. The starter is getting relutant (lack of use probably) but it did start easily and ran very nicely. Engine mounts, exhaust hangers and fanbelt are all showing their age, it's a safe bet the hidden rubber of the suspension mounts is all well past it's prime too. The exhaust is very old and looks to have been bodged, I'm guessing for the 2001 MOT. I'd consider it dead. I wouldn't expect much service from the rad either.

Amazingly the there were no leaks. Diff, box and engine all holding their fluids. Not often you see a dry drive under a Triumph. The sump looked wrong to me, I think it has been dented a long long time ago. I may be wrong on this as it was certainly different to the sumps I've got. It has a much bugger drain plug than I've seen before so I don't know for sure the correct shape. There is an alarm fitted (long ago), I didn't ask if it works. The washer pump failed in the late 90's but is still there. An alternative is attached to the bottom of the bottle bracket somehow. One of the horns has been replaced by a modern one. It's had trouble with binding brakes at the last two MOTs despite being parked with the handbrake off. The aerial is electric and hasn't worked in years.

Inside everything looks nice. There was a strong musty smell, there may have been livestock in there. Only sign I saw was a bit of mouse shit on top of the washer bottle. I don't think it's been smoked in but I'm not at my most sensitive to that at the moment. The radio has been replaced (original lost) and the rear shelf has speakers fitted. The woodwork is very tidy having lived out of the sun most of its life. It is going on top of the OSR door tho.

Not a lot of paperwork, mainly because it's had so little done in its life. The service book is there but completely unstamped. The owner claims it was regularly serviced at the dealership when he used it. No stamps because the mechanics did it evenings / weekends. No explanation for the lack of stamps in its 14k miles of 1st owner use. All the MOTs are there but there are a lot of gaps between them. I didn't check but I'm told the milages tally. Few other invoices inc the current owners purchase.

Potentially a very nice car. IMHO it needs a far bit of work done before it is put into service in order to avoid very rapid deterioration.
