Uneven tyre wear

I have just noticed that on one of my 1500HLs the front nearside tyre has worn on the outer edge quite badly. The thing that I can not understand is that the wear is only limited to about 40% of the tyre circumference with the worst area being in the centre of the effected area.<br>

I have not had time yet to investigate the problem but what are likely to be possible causes of this problem.
