Ralley design

#3 Post by Richard the old one » Thu Apr 21, 2005 7:43 pm

Are you going to ask them if they have changed the build standard (design) of the steering coupling from a pressed steel type to a cast type which is too large to fit without some modification to the car bodywork?

I have just found the receipt for the ones that I obtained they were part number RD820 - Product description Steering Coupling Group 4.

Is this the same as the ones that people have recently been obtaining?
I contacted them, only to be told that the steering coupling (RD820)they sell is for an Escort and probably wouldn't fit a Dolomite.
That`s quite right it is for an Escort, however it seems to be a good fit on the Dolly. It just seems that they have altered the design.

Ralleyn design steering coupling

#10 Post by Richard the old one » Fri Apr 22, 2005 8:11 pm

I telephoned them this afternoon and told the man that I was talking to that a number of Dolomite owners had fitted their steering coupling part number RD820 as a replacement to the OM items as we considered that it was a much better unit. I then went onto tell him that recently they had been supplying a forged item that is bigger then the pressed steel unit that had been previously supplied to a number of us.The man went away to check and on his return assured me that they would only be supplying the pressed steel type in future as this was now the only type that their supplier could obtain. I hope that he has got this right. He said there was no way to identify the difference between the types when ordering. However I would suggest that when anyone orders they state they need the pressed steel type. Time will tell.
Changed my cast unit to a steel one , excellent service from these guys.
Only problem now is i still have virtually no clearance even after i ground back the seam in the inner wing. The joint cant sit any lower as it is touching the steering rack nut. I have heard solid rack mounts mentioned, which mine has, but can't see why this would affect it.

Any clues as other members who have fitted this do not seem to have the same problem. Would appreciate a close up photo if anyone can get this.
Rally Design u/j

#13 Post by Richard the old one » Thu May 26, 2005 10:11 pm

This will not be a lot of help.

I have now fitted the Rally design steering U/J to three 1500HLs without any problems. I have not ground or cut back any bits.

You state that there is virtually no clearance I have looked a two of the car and estimate that there is only an 1/8 to a 1/4 of an inch clearance.

As you state on my cars the u/j can not go any lower.

All my cars have poly mounts on the steering racks so it may be worth seeing if you can move the complete steering rack towards the near side if you slacken off the solid clamps.

Please keep us informed.
Thanks guys.
I would be happy for a 1/4in clearance but don't seem to have it , i need to get the engine back in Friday but will have another go at fully fitting it and see how it goes. It mostly fouls around the bolt so i will try a thin nut and cut the thread as short as possible.
