Seized bolts

#1 Post by Kehoemj » Mon Nov 28, 2005 8:49 pm

Trying to remove the front wishbones to replace the bushes but hampered by a couple of seized bolts. Have tried spraying wd40 & leaving overnight, but not worked. Would appreciate any advice ie good known penetrating oils or any other methods for easing these bolts loose.
Anybody got any replacement bolts for the wishbones in case I have to knacker them in the process.

The bolts that go through the subframe? They're normally covered in oily crud,so should be fine.. All the rest were dry but fine.. Spose i was lucky when i did my poly's.. Try penetrating oil,or a blowtorch if you can<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">

Plus Gas is a very good penetrating oil, available from frosts if you cant find it local to you.
Bolts

I found recently that the bolt joining the front lower wishbone to the tie bar was siezed. I tried WD40 and Plus Gas but nothing would budge it. I managed to remove the wishbone and tie bar by disconnecting the lower ball joint, the tie bar bush end nut and washers and the wishbone bolt (on the subframe). With the two parts off the car you can then immerse the siezed bolt area and then 'pivot' the parts (holding them in a vice) around the siezed bolt to free it.

If its the inner lower wishbone to subframe bolt (unlikely as these are normally protected by oily bit leaks...), if the nut comes off and the bolt turns in the bush it will eventually push through. I try a G clamp and a socket over the bolt head to allow the clamp to push the bolt into the socket. If you hammer it the thread will be useless.
It the bolt wont turn in the bush or is turning the bush with it there is no hope. You just have to get some good quality blades and saw it through either side of the bush.
WD40 isnt much use as penetrating oil. Plus gas won the PC test once.
On the top wishbone you have more leverage and smaller bolts. Just be brutal...
IF, it still drives

i would take it to a freindly garage and ask if you could quickly borrow their air impact gun, (if you dont have one). failing that, as suggested use plus gas which is good, or as a last result use a blow torch. good luck

Another alternative to WD40 is Double T which can be had in your local Morrisons with change from £1. A mate of mine swears by this stuff and he must have it coming out of his ears as he says he buys a tin when he does the weekly shopping. He's got me doing it now as I bought a tin of the stuff on my last visit!
