Tracking or camber?

#1 Post by 2F45T4U » Thu Jun 22, 2006 11:34 pm

Since I've had my car its squealed around corners easily. It wears the tyres down the inside quite a bit. I swapped my front and rears around the other day as I discovered that the inside of the front tyres were down to about 2.5 mm and the outsides were about 5mm! Richards dolly seems to have similar camber but with slightly wider tyres (185 as opposed to 175s) and doesnt squeel...

So tracking or camber?

Check the bush's and make sure none of the arm's are twisted or bent also check the steering rack mount's ,

Then local garage to check the tracking.

If you where local to me I could do a Four Wheel Alignment for you at my place of work.
Thats the bush at the sub frame end isn't it?

I can see that the bushes on either side (of the car) towards the back of the car on the radius arms arent pressed up tight against the subframe.

Best thing to do is check underneath rich's 1850 and see if that's the same.
My 1st SE was so low i trashed a pair of tyres in 3 mths. it was on sprint wheels, and looking side on, the tops of the rims were level with, or possibly even above the highest point of the arch, making lewis K's green beast look like a hi lux! The things you do at 17!

The result was I had to get the sump welded twice, and the tyres were through to canvas and wire sticking out here and there in about 3 mths. You'd never get away with having a car that low on the roads these days.

knackered soft perished bushes will defo cause the problem, it'll be a gradual thing that gets progressively worse as the bushes die, and the more you chuck it about and blast thru the twisties, the worse the effect on your tyres. I'd change the bushes anyway and swop for poly, they're only a few £ a go.

if your ride height is much lower than an inch or so from the standard Hi - lux spec, the problem increases radically as the the wear is automatically shifted to the inner half of the tyre under normal conditions, let alone cornering.

camber adjusted by whacking in or removing shims between the subframe and top mount. I'm pretty certain theres meant to be 2 shims in there as standard.

Of course, for legal reasons, messing around with suspension geometry could be potentially dangerous and should not be attempted by anyone. including me.

(orange will have 3 top mount shims to start with for trial purposes )

PS - have a look at marts site, parts catalogue, front suspension. do you mean 152588 isnt pressed up against subframe? they're meant to be all squished up nice n tight.

depending on the state of the bushes you could try tightening the nut on the inside to pull it all together then get the tracking done, possibly problem solved.

if it was me, 'while you're down there' as the actress said, i'd change the bushes then get the tracking done anyway.
found the problem.

Jonners was right, as if I ever doubted him

On Richs Sprint (that I can keep up with I'll have you know!, we both have obvious problems) the bushes (15258 are tight up against the sub frame. On mine I can roatate em with one finger!

Slowly my cars going fully poly!

Oh and earlier when I came off my drive way (off a curb at full lock left) When I had to straighten up something went bang, and now it makes a very slight vibration/noise when I turn right. If you weren't used to the car I doubt you'd notice it...
