1850 and Sprint racks

#1 Post by 2F45T4U » Sun Jun 25, 2006 5:28 pm

the Sprint is a higher ratio isn't it? Gets from lock to lock quicker?

I think they're both 3.5 turns lock to lock, quickracks are 2.5 turns lock to lock.
I may be talking totally bull, but that's what I remember
All models have same rack. If you want a home made quick rack source the internals from a herald.

Aww what!?

I'm sure I've read that the Sprint had a quicker ratio rack than the original Dolly. I was disputing it with George today, Wasn't worth disagreeing really

Alun. Are the Herald internals directly interchangeable ? What ratio do you finish up with?
Racks

I have found that some 1850s have a 7 tooth pinion, and the Sprints have a 6 tooth pinion. These are interchangable, and it was the fitment of the 7 tooth pinion in the Sprints that gave them the "quick rack".

As far as I know there was only ever one part number across the range, RKC0270, for the complete rack with LHD ones being RKC0271. Saying that I've only ever taken one apart, the cost of a replacement not warranting getting dirty hands!

The herald items are I believe interchangeable Ken, but I've never looked further into it than a conversation I had with JW at Sprintspares many years ago as to how a quicker ratio was achievable
