Quote:
It will be the top one, the bottom is a flexible coupling rather than a UJ and when it fails you get vagueness rather than stiffness.

Do you know this is what I have with my car at the mo, steering feels vague and "dead" I thought it was just me and used to driving the 306, but knew in my heart something was a miss with Dolly.
Is this flexible one easy to change on an 1850? I know access is an issue, can you seperate it from the rack by loosening the adjustment knob on the column once you've undone the bolts top and bottom?

Oh and sorry Chris for frightening you by saying it was the steering rack - just had similar symptons on a car I had a few years back - hell of a job!

Should....

The intermedaite shaft should come off the end of the columm easilly if the pinch bolts are removed from the shaft...3 of them, rack, column and slidey bit. If you undo the column adjuster inside the car it sometimes just pulls out. Last one I tried as mentioned didnt want to shift at all...hence the grease. The old fork type ball joint remover can sometimes be used to persuade them apart. The the flexible bit comes of the shaft at the other end.
Removing steering U/Js or intermediate shafts

I have made a metal wedge which I hammer into the split in the coupling once the bolt has been taken out. The wedge prizes the metal appart sufficient to get the coupling to slide down the splines.
