my back end feels a bit "boaty"

#1 Post by baked bean coloured dolly » Sun Sep 17, 2006 10:00 pm

had the car outside my house today to do some welding (lots of) and when i was driving it back to its garage i came off the verge and the back end seemed to float to the left and right im not too sure what this is im used to driving a mini so the back end on the dolly is a bit alien to me.

Sounds like worn shock absorbers to me....or as a silly question, are the wheel nuts tight?

Could be the shocks, but the bushes are a far more likely culprit. It's probably worth doing them together though.

That's a scarry feeling. I first noticed the problem on my 1850 when I had to let off the throttle while travelling at high speed on the motorway. This created some serious unstability at the back, just as you described. A sharp pull in one direction, followed by a correction on the other direction as the throttle is reaplied.

I'm saving up cash to get shocks and bushes sorted for my car, but please be careful with yours at speed. I rekon if you had to swerve to avoid an obstacle while letting off the throttle things could go a bit wrong.

Good Luck
Tie bar bushes are the most likely suspact, as Mart says. Take a look underneath the car at all the bits of rubber in the suspension though, as if some of them are bad it's likely that the other ones will be too, especially if they are still the original ones.

I only read this after I had added the note about driving a 1500SE this evening with shot rear tie rod bushes. I certainly would not drive a car in that state.

I'm hoping to rebush Snowdrop's rear suspension when I rebuild the rear axle. I just need a replacement diff, a slide hammer and a hub puller. I might have to made do with an old wheel and my lump hammer instead.

Funny - I asked exactly this question of Malc at TDCIR as I need a set for the rear end of my 1500TC.

Rimmers price for a rear axle set (trailing arms and tie bars) is over sixty quid, and I was baulking at that on a car that only cost me £60 in the first place.

Malc unhesitatingly recommended Chris Witor. I have not spoken to Chris yet about price but I have never heard a bad word about him or his business and if its good enough for the Club spares officer, its good enough for me.

I will report back to the board with costs etc in due course.

Having used some of the CW stuff, it really is lovely and similarly, never heard a bad word.

The only time I didn't use him when was I was pricing up rebuilding the lower steering joint, was about 16 quid for all the bushes in poly, or 24 quid for a completely new joint

Re the rear tie bars, I was once booting it out of a 90 degree bend in the sprint when the threads sheared on one of the tie bars. That was "interesting" to say the least...
