Help please....following on from the tie bar bushes thread

#1 Post by David6214 » Wed Sep 20, 2006 8:38 pm

I had a look at the bushes on my daily driver (well daily until yesterday anyway!). I know you can't always tell from a visual inspection, but they look ok. I did notice though that the rear of the car seems to sit about 1-1.5 inches lower on one side than the other.

Anyone think of a reason for this?

The car is on level ground, and I have observed this when parked in more than one place.

I wondered if it could be different springs, but it seems strange. The front is fine. Different springs might account for weird handling over potholes maybe?

I get unintentional mechanical contact of the exhaust on the body on that side if the car is fully laden as well.

Also wondered if my weird noise in third might be partly to do with that - the noise is worse if I press on the centre tunnel!

Its all a bit of a mystery to me....
Thanks Alun. I have some spax in the garage so I'll pop them on and see if it makes a difference. I have some other questions on this car that you might be able to / might like to help with...ok to mail you offline..?

Check....

the sping pan has its rubber bit on the saggy side and that the top mounting is oriented as it should be when fitting the new shocks. WIth the Spring off you can measure the free standing length and compare with the manual setting, which I cant remember OTTOMH, but the rate is 140lb inch std. So a ten stone bloke standing on the spring should make it go down 1 inch then....right?
Of course check the obvious first.

Measure between the wheel centre cap and the bottom of the wheel arch to check it there is a difference, simple reason was on one of my old cars I always thought it sat lower on one rear corner than the other, it turned out to be just the way it sat when parked on the camber of the road and I think exagerated by the flatness off the boot lid and horizontal chrome trim against the black of the boot upright.

Measured the distance - perfectly the same.

Thanks for all this guys. I have a half day tomorrow to try and sort it out. I have measured it good and proper and its genuinely out. I think the spring has collapsed / distorted as it never handles right over bumps and it wasn't like that before.....

Oh and Jonners....I can still remember when I was 10 stone, just about, but it was a long time ago, I'll do the maths on 14 and a half and see what happens (even thats a bit flattering!)

mrs - ouch she wouldn't like me implying she was ten stone, the teenager is only 10 - but feels like she is a 15 year old trapped in the body of a ten year old. Between her and I we might be able to do the division, I keep on at her about practical maths!!
