FUEL HOSE REPLACEMENT
FUEL HOSE REPLACEMENT
HI EVERYONE
JUST A QUICK QUESTION.
I HAVE NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE SHORT FUEL HOSES ON MY SPRINT IS STARTING TO CORRODE.
IS IT A SIMPLE JOB OF JUST UNDOING THE JUBILEE CLIPS AND REPLACING?
ALSO CAN I USE THE SILVER BRAIDED TYPES THAT ARE ON OFFER ON EBAY. THEY ARE 1/2", 3/8" AND 1/4" DIAMETER AND THE ONE ON THE CAR AT THE MOMENT IS 5/16"
OH AND WHILE I'M ON DO YOU JUST RINSE OUT THE IN LINE FUEL FILTER WITH A BIT ON PETROL?

WASN'T JUST A QUICK QUESTION AFTER ALL?
In my experience the braided ones are shite, leak and stab your fingers with wirey bits.

Go to halfwits/local factor buy a bit of pipe (usually sold in 1fts) or occaisionally for free, undo swap and do up.

By new filter assuming it is in-line.

Fit and drive.
Re: answers
I went to my local factors last week to get some braided hose (the transparent stuff) as I'm replacing the fuel pipe from front to back & running the hose inside the car.

He told me that the braided hose is not meant for unleaded petrol & it will evetually "disintegrate" for want of a better word. Anyone heard of this before ?
Re: answers
Never heard that before. I have used it the mini and that runs on super unleaded, it`s been on there ages and I have had no problems, buy it from someone like rally design they`ll know what they are talking about. BTW if you are renewing the pipe from front to back I reckon you would be a lot better off using copper especially if you are running it inside the car, certainly the race regs where we race the mini say that the fuel pipe has to be in metal and run inside the car and where it goes through the bulkhead it has to be sealed with a fire retardent sealer (silicone RTV). You don`t want a fuel hose splitting and spraying you with fuel!!!!

Fuel Hoses
I agree, the braided ones are s****e. They dont seal properly, and the ends fall off exposing the braid which then stabs your fingers. I replaced mine with the unbraided type (from Rimmers) and secured using jubilee clips.

Re: Fuel Hoses
Unleaded fuel is a solvent for certain plastics...I would have thought it unlikely that anyone would be foolish enough to make fuel pipes out of one of these plastics though, but you never can be sure!

Re: Fuel Hoses
I've had to replace the fuel hoses on every Dolomite I've had as the original stuff doesn't seem to resist unleaded petrol very well. Modern rubber hose from any auto parts shop is fine.
Funny...
this comes up - 2 weeks ago I dragged XYJ out of the garage after having to crank her for 3 odd minutes to get her to fire (After checking the usuals, she normally fires on the first few turns of the key after storage) and it transpired the fuel line between the metal pipe from the tank to the carbs had just......split into a million little bits and was peeing fuel everywhere.

Only took 5 mins to replace with some decent tough hosing from halfrauds though. Job done <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Re: Funny...
I would get underneath and check all the others. Short length from tank outlet to pipe, another short piece joining metal pipe lengths just in front of rear axle, and another one under passenger seat. Then there is a longer bit feeding the pump and a similar length from pump to pipe feeding carbs. All these are 5/16. Then there are two pieces feeding the carbs in 1/4. If one section has just failed, then the others may not be far behind.
quality
The quality of fuel hose is variable. The stuff I replaced just a year ago has had it - starting to split where it is bent. only problem is that I can't remember where I bought it from. it was for unleaded (as it is stamped), but I have no idea why it has stuggled to last when the older stuff is still doing a fine job on the rest of it!
Re: FUEL HOSE REPLACEMENT
Fuel hose should conform to BS AU108. Any decent supplier such as Gates should have this printed on the side of the hose. Other rubber hoses maybe lesser specified i.e. for coolant and will go brittle or crack after a time.
