Sprint Flexible Carb Mount Gaskets

#1 Post by clive » Tue May 24, 2005 1:01 pm

I have decided to replace my flexible carb mountings on my 1976 Sprint, as the old ones have perished. My parts book lists two gaskets (either side of the mount); an oval one to the manifold and a square one to the carb (no.s 159870 and 159871). Rimmer's only list the square one and Fitchett's believe the gaskets are unnecessary as the mount provides the seal. The old mounts don't show any sign of paper gaskets (however they were leaking). There is clearly a lip on the new mounts, but is this enough for many happy miles of service? I guess there are a few options: simply mount dry, cut patterns from gasket paper with some hermatite or mount with instant gasket…

Or get the new club alloy mounts? Need to be a club member first...<br>

asked all the same questions and in the end phoned Brian Kitley and they said yes you do and it is a fiver and yes they'll be with you for the weekend.<br>

Fitted the mounts on a saturday and the gaskets arrived on the Monday and are sitting in my carb/fuel spares drawer...<br>

Mounts

Don't be too surprised if your 'new' mounts don't last very long. Fellow club member has just had some 1850 mounts disinegrate after only a couple of thousand miles. He's gone Alloy now, more expensive initially but great long term solution <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START ;) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

I agree (unless they've changed them). I bought some (albeit a few years back) & they lasted about 2-3 months with daily use. I ended up putting the old ones back on until I could find some others.

I've used gaskets, but mainly beacause the studs stuck out a bit too far and hit the carb bodies, so I used gaskets to space them out a bit.<br>

Carb Mounts

When I fitted mine I had to cut a bit off two of the studs as they fouled the carb bodies.<br>
The old mounts didn't have gaskets, so I didn't fit any on the new ones.

carb mounts

Thanks for the advice, I couldn't get hold of the gaskets, so I'll try this weekend with a squidge of instant gasket and hope the rubber lasts more than a couple of months.

Gaskets

#9 Post by MalcGE » Thu May 26, 2005 10:52 pm

Early Sprints had very thin Carb Mounts. These early mounts did feature gaskets. Mount to manifold 159870 and Mount to carb 159871. These thin mounts were changed to thicker syle mounts to accomodate 'later spec' waxstat carbs (the throttle arm configuration is a tad different and needs more clearance, hence the thicker mount). These later mounts had what can be best described as a built in 'o' ring between Mount and Carb, thus no Gasket required. I've sourced some suitable gaskets to go between Mount and Carb for the Club Alloy mounts but not for Mount to Manifold (Resonably easy to cut from Gasket paper though <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START ;) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->
