Fuel tank outlet pipe

#1 Post by davepoth » Sat Jun 04, 2005 6:25 pm

I put the new tank into PRO this afternoon, which went pretty smoothly. However, when I went under the car to fit the fuel line back together, I found that the pipe on the new tank (which was straight) did not line up properly with the line on the car. If I connected it with a length of fuel line I purchased, the line kept falling out of the fittings further along the pipe. I bodged it together with a piece of wire for the moment, but obviously I shan't be driving until I can figure out a solution. The right angle pipe on the old tank appears to have been welded to the tank, and then covered over with fibreglass.

When...

..It was taken from the car the fuel line was held on to that tube/pipe coming fro mthe tank with some rusty clip, similar to jubilee clip. The pipe (flexible stuff) went through a 90 degree angle to fit in to the tank (on the lil pipe your referring to)
Odd. It sounds like the arrangement on my tank was a bit neater, but it might not even have been stock, I suppose.

the tank outlet pipe is held in with a union...bit like a brake pipe but bigger and the pipe is bent about 90 degrees and lines up nicely with the pipe under the boot floor to which its joined by a 2 -3 inch length of rubber pipe and clips....
If its just straight out of the tank you will have grief.
I think later cars were straight

IIRC on XAA the 'union' is straight where it comes out of the tank. The Rubber pipe is then shaped like a question mark (for want of a better way of describing the shape) Rubber pipe is std fuel pipe as available from a good motor factor like Unipart Partco. Rubber pipe is then held to union and metal fuel line with a couple of clips.
I have a gander under XAA tommorrow

..thats what im talking about.
Jon seems to be on about the same thing as Dave

no big deal is it? buy some longer fuel pipe and do the question mark shape thingy. The line on mine was quite stiff and didnt hang down, looked neat the way it was.

And that union thing doesnt come out! I rounded a spanner trying to get that out. guess theres some kind of trick to it?
It came off quite easily. I'll just say you got it unstuck for me. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p">
I've currently got a nice new bit of fuel pipe, and bent it in the question mark shape. But I think I'd feel happier if it was attached as it was before. Does anybody have a spare of the union with the 90 degree bend in it?

The one on my tank appeared to have been welded on, and then cemented in with fibregalss filler. ten minutes with a hammer got it out of the tank, but it was impossible to get the union unscrewed.
