It depends....

what position the dizzy was put in at. It can be one of four, but the others are all worked out from which is no 1 firing at the correct point in the valve opening sequence....
You work this out form where the rotor arm is pointing.
Then its 1342...
Thanks for that.

Assuming distributers were originally installed in the same orientation when leaving the factory can I ask where "conventionally" is the No 1 cylinder connected to in the cap.

cheers
If you can read the word TRIUMPH off the cam/rocker cover then its the bottom left on the dizzy for number 1

Bottom left is a bit misleading on a sprint Adam, the cap is nothing like a normal one.

Edit: Unless you have the club alternative in which case I'll shut up!

It's more reliable to remove plugs 2, 3 and 4 and turn it over by hand until you feel resistance from compression. Make sure you turn it over the right way, so the fan would be pulling air through the rad. The rotor arm will then be approaching no 1 contact.
Here's the standard Sprint dizzy cap lead config. The dizzy will only go in one way (diaphragm facing towards the bulkhead) albeit, you can get it a few teeth out.
my options are limited here i think, i dont think a top take off one will fit under my inlet unless i get leads with 90 degree connectors...
True mart...

But the dizzy rotor will go in in N number of ways where N is the number of teeth on the drive gear.

Obviously with the layout of yours the rotor needs to point at the cap position for No 1 when valves in no 1 pot are on the rock...10 BTDC IIRC.
Ah! yea, see what you mean Jonners. I was thinking Dizzy position as a whole (doh!), yep you're right, the actual rotor can go in several ways. But, set correctly, the rotor arm should be pointing towards the little lug on the dizzy body when no. 1 piston is at TDC.
