Odd cut out

#1 Post by 2F45T4U » Mon Aug 07, 2006 12:01 am

My car cut out the other day as if it had run out of petrol. It was pitch black and we were down some moors

Driving along and then it starts misfiring farting and splutering then it cuts out and we roll to a stop. It wasn't that low on fuel according to the guage so I trying to get it running again. Won't go. Give it two minutes then try to get it running again and it starts up and on we go!

500 metres more and it starts playing up again and conks out... again. Won't start back up instantly but two more minutes after I try again on we go!

Does the same one more time (theres no street lighting around and its about 11.45!) Same again, short break then it will start up.

Last time it done this, with the last engine, was about 3 months ago... I use a fuel filter and it was clean both times, maybe a bit low with fuel but with the fuel lines off the carbs it pumped well enough. Both times it has happend was shortly after I'd changed my petrol from 95 RON to 97!

It was identical circumstances both times, just like the car had ran out of petrol.

What could it be then? Is 97 RON fuel lumpier?
Hi, had a problem exactly the same as this but with a Ford, changed lots and as with you, fuel filter was clean... it turned out to be the filter on the end of the fuel pick up pipe in the tank was blocked and when the engine was running it would stop after a while. If it was left, it would then start after about ten minutes! Hope this helps.

tank vent in the fuel filler cap. If you get this again and it cuts out, immediately take off the filler cap. Any detectable vacuum and there is your fault...new filler cap.
Are you sure its fuel? I had a very similar problem a while ago and traced it to the ignition system - condensor was on its way out / loose connection.

Sounds a bit like a duff condensor to me too. BTW if you have the engine and carbs set up for 95 RON you won't get too much benefit from 97.

Agreed. Just because it says 'super' doesn't mean that it is.
Yer but if its at base settings there going to be base settings for 97 RON fuel aren't they

Is it at base settings though? I thought George set it up for you, in which case he would probably have retarded the ignition a bit for 95 RON, and also adjusted the carbs for it too.

Nope, I set it up.

George is there to teach me not for me to run to when I CBA

Oddly enough though I had it running at TDC (so ignition was 11degrees advanced!) on 95 RON and it didn't pull to badly, even had more grunt low low down, say 1000-1500. Not advancing properly maybe (vacuum or weights)?

Arse about...

You set it up at TDC, when it should have been 11 BTDC so it was 11 degress retarded, not advanced....

If you have it at 11 it will be livelier still....a lot livelier in fact!
Of course I set it at 11 before once I'd found out it was set up wrong

And no the starts weren't MUCH livelier. It developed more power higher up but seemed to of lost a touch down low.

I just don't think a basic engine with a fairly normal compression ratio needs 97RON. Save yourself 20p per gallon and retard the ignition a few degrees.

I'd rather have it pulling nicely from 1000rpm to 4000rpm then 4000 to 6000rpm as well so why not set it up so that you can make use of that range. Engine might last longer??!!
that the metal contact on the condenser leads (black/ orange wires, that connects to the points) is fully insulated from the baseplate.

George had a look at it today, ignition was more or less bang on and we reset the carbs and he balanced them. Much better Pulls better all round now
