Fans and Fanbelts

#1 Post by Leeds Sprint » Fri Aug 11, 2006 5:14 pm

Hello All

My fan belt snapped on the way home from work today breaking off one of the fan blades in the process.

First off, can I get a Dolomite (1978 1850 HL)fan belt at most normal auto parts stores, or is it specific to Dolomites only? As I would like to get my car back on the road this weekend.

Is a fan with a missing blade a big problem? It looks like I would have to take the radiator out to replace the fan.

Could I get away with leaving the fan in as is? Or is replacing the fan essential? I'm thinking that with only one missing blade, the fan should not cause too many vibrations. But I don't want any wobbling causing any damage to the bearings.

What do you all think?

Thanks

Chris
Rimmers quote same part number for 1850,1500 & 1300. Different for sprint. Looks like you could have a sale Adam!
I'm no expert with the 1850 but i would suggest the bearings might wear due to the imbalance and may not provide enough cold air to the rad causing it to run hot.
I would play it safe and replace the lot, better safe than sorry.

You should be able to get a belt at most factors, if you have the remains of the old one with a part number on it that will make it easier for a factors to match it up, you can easily change an 1850 fan without taking the rad out, just be prepared to lose some skin off your knuckles. I have one sitting on the shelf in my shed thats not bein used. I`m in hants if you want it.

I have (I think somewhere) what I believe to be an 1850 fan if you want it it's yours. If I can find it and confirm that it is an 1850 fan. it was on my Sprint when I bought it. I also have the fan belt but you can get these at your local factors.

My Dolomite came with a few boxes of parts when I bought the car. Included in this was a fan with 13 blades. It looks like it has simmilar moutings to the one on my car that has 7 blades like the one in the picture of the brown Dolomite above.

Are there fans with differing numbers of blades that fit on Dolomites?

If I could figure out how to post photos, I would show you what the fan looks like.
This is what the 13 blade fan looks like:
This is the fan that came in the boot of my Dolomite when I bought it. Does any one know if it looks like something that could be fitted to my 1978 1850HL.

Sorry the pictures are so small. I can't figure out how to post bigger photos on here.
Thanks
that looks exactly like the fan on my sprint. I would assume the pulley on the front of the 1850 is the same as the sprint, and the cooling can't be any worse. Go for it .

1850 is solid and the Sprint is Viscous mounted. That looks like a Sprint one in the pic.

Viscous Mounted Fans

#14 Post by Leeds Sprint » Sat Aug 12, 2006 10:13 am

The fan on my car has 3 mounting bolts. The spare fan has 4 holes in the mounting bracket that dont look like they will line up with the location of the the existing bolts and I can't find an unused mounting hole on the front engine block.

I'm guessing that the spare fan I have will not fit onto my car using the bracket as shown in the image above.......

Does it need to be fitted as a whole unit? Can blade head be fitted to the fan pully independantly of the mounting plate?

Also what is a viscous fan? I have heard them mentioned on previous threads, but I don't understand the difference with the other fans. Do they spin faster? Do they provide better cooling?

Any thoughts?

Chris

PS. I think I may have an odd fan with 4 mounting holes going spare. (see pics above)

Thats the fan, bracket, pulley and viscous coupling off a sprint. The viscous bit (the alloy bit with fins) decouples the fan from the pulley. This allows the fan to spin slower than the pulley when the car is cool sapping less power leaving more to annoy GTIs with . As it gets hot it becomes more viscous, the fan turns faster and shifts more air. Don't underestimate the HP consumed, it's several bhp IIRC which is why electric fans are popular.

Dunno if it's a straight swap. Jonners will. I guess yes.

There is a downside to viscous couplings. They are expensive, they fail and occasionally fail spectacularly throwing the fan through your rad.
