Squealing FWD

#1 Post by dollysteve » Wed Sep 14, 2005 9:22 am

Yesterday my 1300 FWD started making a very high pitched squealing sound, it seems to get worse when putting on left hand lock and totally dissapears when turning right, also when I apply the brakes the noise goes. Any clues where I should start looking. I don`t know a huge amount about FWD`s so need a bit of guidance.

its time to put new piston seals in your callipers.<br>
I suspect one of them is a bit sticky and isnt retracting properly. <br>
Hard and or regular use sometimes sorts it out...the car is telling you it isnt being used enough.<br>

Hmmm, sounds like you could be right. I have hardly used it and it`s only done local trips. Now my Golf has gone bang, the Triumphs have been pressed in to daily service and the little FWD straight off did an 80 mile round trip yesterday and this morning took us the 20 miles to work which is has to do again on the way home.

squeeky brakes

#4 Post by DailySprinter » Wed Sep 14, 2005 2:28 pm

Bet by the end of all that use the squeek goes away.<br>
<br>
If they have'nt overheated and been burning, they should free up with regular use. <br>
If it has'nt gone by the weekend, take the pins and pads out , check pistons are free, then clean the pins and copperslip, and also apply copperslip to the back of the pad. Job shouls be a good'n

Not a bad idea, actually I have a set of pads in stock, are they the same as Dolly pads????

I believe the fwd pads are not the same as Dolomite ones.<br>
<br>
However, they do fit, and do the job. I know, as I seem to recall fitting Dolly pads to a fwd, and also fwd pads to a Dolomite. This is mainly because when a set of pads goes for 3 or 4 quid all in on Ebay, I pick them up to keep as spares, so I use what I've got when I need them <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> <br>
<br>
I suppose fwd pads might be a bit softer as Dollies have servos, and as standard only TC fwds do. However, you have a servo, so that negates that little issue <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> <br>
<br>
BTW, saw a 1300 TC today, chap from down the road who bought a starter off me. Was valencia blue, tan interior, and running very nicely indeed. Asked him to pop over in that so I could check out the throttle linkage in case anyone wants to go to SUs in the future. Forgot to get a proper look as I was doing the headlight on my 2000 when he got here, but it looks quite straightforward, not sure what you'd do about the heater valve without the TC mainfold though.
