Handbrake Cable Woes

I have got a '76 Dolomite 1500 HL.<br>

I fitted new hand-brake cables during the week but they're just as bad as any that were fitted before - this will be the 3rd set. It's like the inner cables are too long. Even though it's adjusted right up at the wheel end the handbrake lever is still pointing to the roof before anything happens. Previously, I've crossed the cables over above the prop-shaft, which improved the handbrake action but would probably burst the guides in the long term. <br>

have you checked the rear brake shoes ,they could be worn , seized or just need adjusting.<br>

You haven't fitted Sprint cables by mistake ? What is the part number of the items you've used ?

I have just put a long winded solution on the "other" forum we speak on.<br>
<br>
The reason is that your handbrake lever arms that operate on the ratchet wheels are worn.<br>

I thought it might have been Sprint cables but the problems has been the same for 3 sets (including the originals) so I'm fairly certain that's not the problem, but will check the part number.<br>
<br>
I'll be fitting a new wheel cylinder during the week so that will be an ideal time to check the adjusters.<br>
<br>
I'll let you know how I get on.<br>

The arms themselves bend but rarely wear; the cogs on the 'self' adjusterds do however wear and do not come as part of the cylinder. Beware, there are LH and RH self adjusters; get them wrong and they don't work as they should.<br>

If nothing is worn, do make sure the adjusters are screwed fully in to start with new cables and check shoe wear also

Sorry of digging up an old thread and many thanks again for the advise.<br>

The issue seems to have been the auto-adjusters. Off-side lever (internal) is missing altogether and the near-side one was bent. I just manually adjusted them is far as I could and still get the drum on and the car holds on an incline at 4 clicks.<br>
<br>
I also think the H shims are missing. I have managed to compensated for that just now but will investigate at a later date.<br>
<br>
MOT retest tomorrow :-) and I'm confident of a favourable result.
