Chassis rails
I thought i'd hop underneath the sprint with a measuring tape to further investigate why the front wheels seem to be located further to the right than the left of the car.

Sure enough, there is 20mm difference b/t rear-subframe mount and left edge of body and the same points on the right hand side.

Chassis rail has taken a hit then - but i already knew that, i was in the car when i happened. Front wheel and chassis rail took the brunt of a kerb at about 60km/h.

Question is - what now? Do i take the car to a chassis alignment jig? Do i hit the offending bit with large persuader? Do i just replace the chassis rails - which are full of dings and have to be the puniest rails i have ever seen!!

Re: Chassis rails
Err dunno!

There are various check dimensions on page 03.4 of the workshop manual, but none that would directly help you.....I think.

Has it affected the handling? Go for a 4 wheel alignment check and see what the result of that is. I don't think replacing the chassis rails would cure it on their own; the front subframe mounts are independant of the chassis rails and fix through the inner wings.

The Club can sell you a pair though; bit thicker than original too.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Re: Chassis rails
I did have a 4-wheel "thrust" alignment done, which aparently was "way out". The handling and tracking is fine it just looks odd.

Would i be correct in thinking that the rear subframe mounts are on the ends of the chassis rails?

My theory is that the rear of the subframe has been shunted to the right 20mm - the bushes seem to be a bit off centre in the same direction also.

Thicker, huh? Not that i plan to make a habit of running into things... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

Andy - how much would a set of shinny new chassis rails cost me?

Cheers,
Re: Chassis rails your's 4
You'd get two pair for both!

At the same time of course!!

(That one with the big blue eyes (no way am I going to imbroil myself trying to spell her surname) from the other programme would be a fair substitute; I understand the Minogues are quite busy these days!)<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

straight chassis??
Suggest you measure the wheelbase on both sides, between the centres of both wheels and then measure the diagonals. It doesn't matter exactly what you measure diagonally as long as it is the same both ways - actually easier than it may sound. I usually hook a steel tape around a ball joint nut on the front suspension and measure to an easily identifiable point on the rear axle (other side of course). That will give you an indication of how far out of true it is. If it isn't too bad then a good alignment specialist may well be able to sort it out - you can even change camber at the same time - otherwise he'll point you in the direction you need to go to get it sorted. I doubt you'll improve anything significantly with a hammer at home.
