The key thing is choice, one pays ones money and one takes one's choice. The other dimension is time, quite a bit of it involved, lest anyone wasn't aware

1. Identify production source and discuss
2. Locate OE Sills and supply as a pattern
3. Recieve 1st Sample
4. Circulate sample for evaluation
5. Undertake 'test' fit - especially important is originality is involved, gotta look right as well as being right
6. Order up and pay for batch
7. Club lists item in spares page (remember prices inc carriage)
8.Store on behalf of club
9.Recieve orders from club, package items and take to the courier.

Alun, we will need another 10 pairs + before all of the above is sorted and fully operational. I anticipate being pleasantly surprised if replicas of quality can be produced and distributed for less than £70 a pair, but I like pleasant surprises
One member has just ordered two club sills, after using a lower wing repair, he decided not to fit the 'thin' repro skin (source of manufacture and supply unknown) sill, left that in the loft and ordered two of the club panels, is highly delighted, make it 20 pairs Alun before 'our man' retires

Good healthy debate, nothing wrong with that.

At the moment I don't need to purchase a sill or two, however, if I need to then it would be the club panel(s) hands down.

Price and fit, from what people say, is top notch. Originality is a great thing to aim for but unless you really want (and can afford) a concours car, some 'adjustments' to a panel would be just fine with me.

Obviously with something like a wheelarch repair panel, the best fit is preferred and saves time in the long run, but a vee or no vee in a sill doesn't bother me one way or another, some people it obviously does and thats ok. Maybe the vee sill can be offered as an option if slant04 (sorry, I don't know your name ) wants to do the legwork?
my bit...

#20 Post by dollyboy » Wed Jun 28, 2006 5:47 pm

The club panels I've used are sills and lower wind repair sections.

having just done my SE with help of welder buddy, I have to say the club sills are fine. they're not a breeze to marry up but then again you wouldnt expect them to be.

my body guy reckons the wing repair sections are great.

nowt wrong with looking into alternatives really but from hands on experience, existing club stuff is fine - if it could be improved upon, then great, but while the club stuff exists as it is, just on the principal that folks have gone to great lengths to make them happen in the first place, i'd stick with the club ones.
Marry up

#25 Post by slant04 » Wed Jul 05, 2006 12:50 am

Well you tried matching up 2 panels of a different profile!

I value your imput Alun but I dont think anyone could be that daft for try and fit the wrong side!

You are doing a great job for the club and my comments are by no means meant as a criticism of the hard work you put into your role. But what I would add is seek good independant advice from someone who is in the trade other than your supplier (and me). If they are selling you this product, which as far as I can see is pressed and maybe sourced for a 1/3rd party for £10.50, made of zintec steel (the same as that supplier), it is fair to examine it further. I know of no manel manufacturer who makes panels from a traditional method (such as colliers, vintage panel craft, etc) who uses that stuff. Even the rimmer ones, which I must admit are far from briliant (but hafe the dreaded vee) are not made from that!

None taken...

#26 Post by alun n » Wed Jul 05, 2006 9:08 am

That's because most after market panel manufacturers have no vested interest in making a panel that lasts a long time!

I equally welcome your input...I spend too long with this obsession as it is. If someone else wants to take on the mantle of R&D, sourcing, innovating, purchasing, storing, taking orders and shipping then I will be very happy. If it is for a better product I will be extremely happy. However, if the supplier is any further distant from me than the current one then it most definitely won't be me.

This is an issue which does need addressing; 'our' man is already 67 and only works 4 short days a week. He says he won't retire...

(I have good banter with Dollyboy; my tongue in cheekiness obviously didn't transmit that time...it is the first pair he's tried to fit afterall )

Alun and I do enjoy some banter, its all harmless, and in my occasional dealings with him for parts etc I've always found the 'service' both fair, flexible and accomodating, and would also like to think that I can/will return the favors as and when.

While some of my comments on here can also be interpreted as provocative from time to time, as can others, whats the point in a message board if people cant air their views????

whos right or wrong? doesnt matter, we're all on here to learn from others experiences.

just a forum to express opinions, share advice, valuable parts, knowledge and experience.

ref panels - whats currently available works fine - in fact very well... But if someone came up with something better for similar money, great, but I dont care personally, because I now have pretty much everything I need for my 'projects'. thats not to say I wont require more bits in the future of course, and my 1st ports of call will generally be alun or rimmers, both have looked after me handsomely. if theres other sources, thats great too!
Well said Jon.

As a good mate of Alun's, I know the hard work that he has put into making the club cills available at such a reasonable price. I agree with Alun's sentiment, everyone is free to look into alternative arrangements if they are after something different. Thos of us who have been around a little longer will remember having to buy OE panels (ouch) or dodgy patterns that looked crap and were made out of 'Fiat Uno' grade steel. The new ones are proven, cost effective, easy to fit and excellent for most of us.

Fill up, if you're after something you perceive to be better.

I think its fair to say that trying to market an alternative panel through the club will not be a productive use of the volunteer's time, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. I'll be sticking with the Reg Reg panels.

Regards,
Jod

Is it not sensible to have a new source lined up before the current one dries up? I'd wager it'll not be a quick process to get samples made, tested and perfected. Best to go through that at a convenient rate while we have a viable supply and so no great pressure.

Forward planning I call it.
