Re-shells

#1 Post by David6214 » Sun Jul 23, 2006 1:29 pm

At the risk of being chucked off the forum for no original cars left.... could someone point me in the direction of any postings about reshelling sprints into other bodies.

I have really useful info on the mechanics that I would need to swap if I used an 1850 or a 1500 (Thanks to Alun and Phil) but I was wondering if I could use a 1300 shell as these seem easier to find at the moment for 'better' prices. I really don't know much about them, I don't even know if they are rwd, or will accomodate the relevant bits. A simple yes you can do it with a bit of fiddling, or don't even bother would suffice as a response! Thanks

Yes, it can be done, the most obvious difference is the headlamp panel I believe there are a bracket or two on the sprints that aren`t present on the 1300`s.

Get a 1300 dolomite, the ones with the square lamps and chrome hub caps. fit sprint gear but leave it a square lighter with the camp hub caps on

Go wind some chavs up

It can be done, but...

...the additional problem you will have with either a 1300 or 1500 shell over an 1850 is all the wiring is on the wrong side.

Then you have non adjustable steering column, narrow seats without rear pockets and a flat dash as well as the square headlamps mentioned earlier. The headlamps can be changed but you'd need a new inner front panel which would mean taking front wings and front outer panel off to do properly. It has been done by butchering the existing panel, but the result is a bit 'bug eyed'

If you are bothering with a reshell one would presume the new shell is sufficiently sound not to warrant internal panel painting?

This is true. A full respray is likely to cost over £2000, and then there is a lot of time, or money depending on whether you want do do it yourself, that will need to be spent on putting all the bits back in the car. So unless your car is really, really rotten, or if you can find a decent 1850 HL in the right colour, I'd look at finding out how much the welding will be on your sprint. What needs doing?

Every Panel was rusty, a hole large enough in the boot for the spare wheel to fall through (it did but only onto the trailer) both floor pans gone, chassis caved in, had been moved around a yard with a tractor (metal to metal). door pillars gone at the bottom, roof shot and it creaked like it was going to snap when it came off the trailer....

That is how VLK was when we bought it...and the seller drove it here!

Two years on now and a ruck of 'club' panels on R&D duty and she's nearly ready for respray!

A 1500 hl is ok for the reshell but still the same wiring probs as the 1300 go for a 1850.
