Bulkhead pad - what type?

#1 Post by simonhorton » Sat Sep 02, 2006 9:10 am

Hi All,
I have an original new old stock bulkead pad - which i want to fit to my car.
The one that came off the car seem to have a covering over the pad material.
Any info?
Bitumen / Limestone mix, with crepe paper covering, should be 3mm thick but was probably more like 2.5mm

No idea where you'll find it these days, original manufacturer went out of business 2 years ago now. I used to 'work' there.
What proprtion was the mix Jod?

Two types:

Early nice ones seemed to be a moulded pad with sealed radiuses to the edges of all the cut outs and made from a closed cell material. Overall thickness was about 10mm, but it was also shaped to the profile of the pressing of the bulkhead

Later nasty stuff was an open cell sponge material, simply die cut to shape and laminated with a thinner (approx 3mm) bitumen looking sheet (presumably Jod's stuff) - sponge side adhered to bulkhead, so virtually impossible to remove and outer sheet generally delaminated under self weight.

i reckon the more modern foil lined stuff is better anyway, you can buy this in sheets of about 1 sq metre, you need to cut it to size and keep tabs on where the entries through the bulkhead are.

its for sound deadening, not much more, but the foil stuff is better for reflecting heat, and more useful for tuned up cars or those with bigger mad head engines, see pics of alg1ks bay
Hmmmm, general, non-bonded deadener sheet, usually '5548' compound, by weight: 50% 75/30 oxidised bitumen, 50% standard limestone mixed together. Once mixed, add 5% of total weight in mulched paper fibres to give it a little more body. Then add any old crap you sweep-up off the floor to improve the quality-ness of it
You want the self adhesive barrier mat from Noisekiller, as long as you aren't too fussed about originality. I bought a half sheet from them and covered my bulkhead, gearbox tunnel and passenger footwell.
