Tips on re hanging doors
Tips on re hanging doors
I will be fitting 4 refurb doors to my car later in the year, has anyone on here got any tips on how to get them aligned easily?

Reason being, I fitted a replacement to another car I owned around 10 years ago and in the 8 years of ownership I spent almost every weekend fiddling to try and get a perfect shut on it and never suceeded, spending the next approx 40 years fidding with 4 doors doesn't fill me with enthusiasm.

and one would think they'e all meant to be the same...

theres a small amount of adjustment in the lock on the door, the catch in the shell and also the hinges. hinges can be spaced using washers, but that really shouldnt be required.

extra pair of hands v useful with this job!

project orange - gradual progress
project STEALTH - PASS!!!
project white - AAARGGGHHH!!! too many cars!!!

Re: Tips on re hanging doors
Some doors just plain won't fit some cars.

This is the very reason I 'invented' the lower door repair panels so the doors that fit a shell can be retained.

We have finally sorted a set of 4 for VLK as its frames were shot too. Steve & I tired of offerering up doors to it. We did find correlation with late shell late doors and early car early doors working best...

I guess that has something to do with the press tools wearing out?

Doors
I reskined and fitted a new passenger door to my 4 door Toledo and had great problems getting the top of the door window frame to clear the 'B' post. In the end I had to grind off the welds and refix the front of the window frame section. My advice would be to try the doors ASAP before painting etc to ensure they fit. Some cars had shims fitted under the hinge plates.
These doors are off a '76 car and going on my '75 Dolly:
Hoping to mark the hinges with a fine tip felt tip (one that won't wipe off easily) after cleaning the posts off of oil with petrol, then line them up as close as pos to the marks and pray!
I wonder how they did them in the factory?

doors
easier to pull of strikere on the pillar adjust gaps via shims (most doors have these)it's a bit of a pain to get the gaps right but it's a case of trying it up and add/ remove shims as required then when door gap is ok refit the striker plate to the pillar and set it up i usually hold the button in till i can feel it's ok then just tighten it and then adjust the body line after by closing it and moving the plate in or out
you can use a trolley jack to support the door (with a block of wood)
