under the dash (bulkhead cracked)

I've just pulled out the parcel shelf to fix mey radio aerial, and as I feared, The front bulkhead needs work. The accelerator bracket seems to be over a crack in good metal that comes from the hole where the seal is for the wires to go through. <br>

Is this just a case of welding up a plate over it, and then bolting the bracket back on?

Its a common problem esp as the throttle linkage gets stiff.

I had this and discovered it when mine started only pulling 70 top wack...throttle peddle was bending bulkhead instead of opening butterflys. As a weld repair meant ripping out the entore loom I just rivetted a plate on...been there 10 years now.<br>

Must be catching, faced with the same challenge as Jonners a few years ago, I too reinforced the area with a sheet steel plate, didn't rivet it though, glued it with Araldite, rest of the shell fell apart before that plate needed any attention. Get a "cracking" noise from around the pedal area when cornering left, but not when cornering right. Car looks fine from underneath when on a ramp. Anyone else had the same problem.

Only on left handers, not your head hitting the B post is it <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :rollin --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> , Seriously, it could be subframe bushes, especially rears allowing some movemement of the subframe at the rear. Also check the bushes in the end of the lower arm where it meets the subframe (the lower arm that runs form the lower balljoin to subframe) I had a bushed bush in one of these once, caused similar syptoms to those which you describe.

Looks like there's been a whole heap of welding done in the area (new passenger bulkhead, some jagged bits left over, new transmission tunnel) but the driver's side isn't too bad. I'll se what my man says. Either way, the parcel shelf is in a sorry state, held together with duck tape for the most part. Anybody ever try to make a new one?

Had the final bit of welding done to my sprint today, including offside inner arch and area around the pedals, my man used smifter's pedal to bulkhead idea which seems to have worked well, liberal coating of rust inhibitor and underseal should ensure no future occurance.<br>
Interesting idea regarding do-it-yourself parcel shelf. Mine too has disintegrated along with the usual hackabout to install some mega sound system in the past, which included inserting massive self tapping screws in the padded rail!!! but if anybody has a half decent replacement looking for a new home they can email me on mandy dot carter at ntlworld dot com.<br>

As to making a parcel shelf, does anybody have a diagram as to what one should look like? Looking at it, there are two types, one where the rear demister is mounted in the sgelf, the other where its mounted on the dash. I hqve the wrong type and the hole is covered in gaffer tape.<br>

I guess a blueprint could be made up for it, perhaps making the centre section out of wood to support said huge sound system...

I`ve had 3 dolly`s now, well actually one was a Toledo, all of them have had a saggy shelf and the current is no different, all of them sagged either side of the transmission tunnel, it would be nice to try to make it out of something a bit more robust than the orrigami mess that BL put in.
