Stuck Clutch

#1 Post by Silvery » Sun Feb 15, 2004 7:52 pm

Fitted my new rocker stud yesterday on the TC - First time that engine's ever sounded any good! Can finally set the tappets properly. Or at least, my way, which does the job <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Car's actually running on 4 cylinders now, instead of 2 and 2 other bits, has to be a good start. Shame the bottom end's gone, or I think I could live with it as is for a while. Still not had chance to find out the reason for the random sagging though.

Went to do a little work on the fwd this afternoon. Good to see yet another reman part in plastic that's far too bigfor the hole it goes into. This was the throttle rod bush, that lives in the bulkhead. Even the outer diameter of the inner bit was too big, after trimming all the lip away! Some work with the stanley later, it just about squeezes in, bit of silicone will finsih the job when I get round to it. Might call Canley and point out selling the part is great, but next time, can they get some made that fit? Had similar probs with the steering bottom bush last year..

Clutch is still stuck on on the car - Tried starting in gear with the pedal down and brakes on - The starter motor's a good one! But no luck. Faffed witht the pedal a bit, nothing. Wedged a bit of wood on the pedal now - Just wondered how long it's likely to take to pop off? Want to get the car sorted and on the road soon, and it's going nowhere till the clutch is off. Can't bump it and welly the brakes either, as the front left disc is shattered, and I'm worried about putting too much uneven load on the diff...

Keep trying it in gear with brakes off. Keep going from 1st to reverse & back and let the car move a couple of inches forward then a couple back. I did this on my Sprint yesterday.

That's worth a try <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Managed to drive about 8 feet on the starter with the brakes off today... Good little motor on it, and the ring gear's not bad either then (replaced the ring a month or so ago - The fwd is a silly layout, but it makes jobs like that *alot* easier!).

I know the clutch wasn't stuck Xmas day, because I went for a play to fit one of the new seats that day, and I'm sure I fired her up and took her a few feet forwards and backwards to rotate the tyres and keep things free. So the car's only been stood a month, month and a half, tops, for this to happen. Can't be *that* badly stuck.

Will try the forwards and backwards trick next time I'm up there, if the bit of wood hasn't worked by then <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Stuck Clutch

Run the engine to normal temp,
And try again,
Drive car in 1st/2nd gear with foot down on clutch pedal then stamp on brake's and leave your foot on clutch pedal(This may be not wise with your disc's? )try this a couple of time's,
Failing that clutch out

Dashing

#5 Post by Silvery » Sun Feb 15, 2004 9:49 pm

Sod taking the clutch out! I'm not going near that box of wonders laughingly referred to as a gearbox unless i absolutely have to! Besides, the interior's in good nick, don't want to disturb it (enough excuses for me to be lazy yet? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D"> )

I had the engine up to fairly warm today, and tried, but no joy. Going back up to where the car is over the next couple of days, might have another play, or at least see if leaving the pedal down has done anything.

Other option is to very carefully drive the car to where the brakes are getting done (still in 2 minds as to whether to pop the driveshaft off myself and get the hub pressed off, or just pay someone to do the whole lot), and once the brakes are fixed, get it going in gear then slam on the anchors, see if that does it. I'd be far happier driving the car off to get the brakes done with the rest of it working though, for quite obviour reasons!

I'm sure the clutch will unstick easily enough, I'm just impatient... And I know the hydraulics are OK, as I can feel the pressure on the pedal, checked the fluid, etc. Bet a seal pops now I've said that..

Clutch: start engine and get to temp, then turn off and lift a rear wheel (both if you have an LSD<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> ) restart the engine whilst in gear and then apply the brakes with the clutch pedal down too. Bang! Clutch free. Worked every time for me so far......

Crunch

#7 Post by Silvery » Mon Feb 16, 2004 1:36 am

I can see a problem doing that somehow...

Maybe it's the fact with the rears in the air, the car would simply pull itself off the jack/ stands/ whatever it was on...

And if I altered the method to work on my car, still doubt it'd be a good idea as only one wheel has working brakes...

Otherwise, a damned good idea, and one I would already have tried!

I had the same prob with my 1850 last summer. Tried for a month all the above (and some). In the end paid a guy from the local garage to come round with his trade plates (car had no MOT etc) and he drove it off in first gear whilst pumping the clutch pedal. Within a mile it came off and never given any problem since.

Probably useless in your situation with your brake problem but I like to think it was the best £20 I ever spent on the car.
