Clutch Problems

#1 Post by Carl » Mon Feb 16, 2004 8:13 pm

I'm having some problems with the clutch on my Sprint. Until recently it was light and smooth in operation, one of the best I've ever had in fact. At Christmas, I noticed that it had suddenly become quite rough with the pedal releasing in a series of 'jumps' as if it was sticking. Checking it over I found that the master cylinder was leaking slightly so I replaced the seals. All was well for a couple of weeks but then it began to get rough again. Now it is almost undriveable. The clutch assembly is about 3.5yrs and 10,000 miles old. When I fitted it I also cleaned and checked the operating mechanism in the bell-housing. The hydraulic system was all new about a year ago. The 'biting point' is unchanged and there are no leaks. I can't see anything obvious. Any ideas ? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">

Possible simple solution: a badly rucked footwell carpet has previously caused my clutch pedal to stay on the floor due to friction between it and the side of the pedal arm believe it or not; try it with the carpet out - I had to get the side of my shoe behind the pedal and lift it up which didn't lend itself to a smooth change either!
Possible complicated solutions: Its a QH clutch which is falling apart within the bell housing (happened to me twice; the plate literally disassembled itself, once on a Sprint, once on the '6)......dried out release bearing no longer spinning as it should (any noises?).....cover spring worn eccentrically causing it to snatch as it releases (caused by loose engine back plate or bellhousing or sandwhich plate, or flywheel, or thrust washers....).....

Crutchety Clutch

As usual, Aluns 'look see areas' to be checked. I had the spring go in the Clutch Master Cylinder once, that gave similar symptoms to those you describe, but alas, with all of these things it is 'in the feel'. you've re-sealed the Hydraulics, so assume the spring was OK then, but once all other lines of enquiry are eliminated, might be worth a look
