fitting 1500 o/d into 1300 dolly
am in thew proccess of removing the engine and o/d gearbox from a rotten 1500 hl and am planning to fit the box into my 1300 using my 1300 engine that i know is good.does anyone know any pitfalls to doing this?are there any parts apart from the obvious that i need remove from the scrapper?will my tunnell need changing?thanks in advance.bunny(pageant blue 1300 with ladders)

What is obvious?
Box must have same number of input shaft splines or you'll need a new clutch plate. Wiring loom for gearbox must come with it. Stick. Cross member and prop shaft.
Why not get the tunnel as well if its there. Also parcel tray, dash and heater if its an HL while you are at it. May as wel have the adjustable column as well and the bigger seats. The there is the sill kick plates to finish it off...oh and the 4 headlights and boot lid and vinyl rear panels...there it is one 1300HL Dolly...
sorry got a bit carried away there...
Re: What is obvious?
are the splines different on the two boxes?do i need to change the tunnell?im hoping that i wont as it seems a hassle having removed it from the donor for ease of dismantling.i thing ive already got the same parcel shelf tho.cheers .bunny

Gearbox Swap
I did the same conversion on my '76 1300 (God rest his sole). Very easy to do just the wires to change, clutch and thats it.

You can use your tunnel and propshaft.

Good luck.

Sorry Alan...
but an o/d box is about 6 inches longer so theres no way the prop sliding joint will take that much...and you need the cross member and mounting too....
Tunnel is the same I think but why not have it anyway and play safe. The HL one will have the mounting for the nice placcy tray...
The clutch spline count did change but may be on earlier Dollies only. Worth checking though.
O/D Box Swap
Have done this swap a couple of times (with the same g/box!)

Most likely you'll have single rail boxes(reverse beside 3rd),these should have 1in 23 spline i/p shafts.

The rear g/box mounting on the back of the subframe has to be removed and the extra crossmember from the o/d car needs to be fitted (i think the holes are already drilled?).

The prop joint will slide enough (I never even had an o/d prop).

The feed for the reverse light switch feeds the solenoid through the inhibitor switch,an in-line fuse is a good idea .

Good Luck
Re: O/D Box Swap
right well that all seems fairly straight forward(ish)just trying to iron out any wrinkles before i take my beloved 1300 apart as its my daily driver that i use for my work as a window cleaner.ill let you all know how i get on.may be a few weeks tho.....ive kinda got used to not having reverse and first tho,its been broken for 10 months!the poor old clutch is slipping badly now tho hence the panic!cheers all.bunny

its done!
its fine and dandy!utter luxury-reverse gear oh joy!overdrive even better than i was hoping.looking at it after there probably was enough movement in the sliding splines on the prop but i changed that anyway.the box and o/d is only about an inch longer than the standard.the only nightmare i had was that i baught a standard 1300 clutch but my 1300 is a 1980 regd one and the 79-80 cars had 1500 cluches fitted-doh!thanks a lot to all those that helped.(including my "dont like getting my hands dirty" dad who i roped in to tweak the engine crane!all in all ive worked it out that i had no revers or first for 14 months,is this a record?no more pushing into parking spaces.........bliss......

Re: its done!
My first Dolly never had reverse in all the time I owned it. Delightful sandglow 'n' rust machine. Once you get used to not being able to go backwards its not too bad living without it.
piece of cake!i found it fairly easy.as above.has made a world of difference to cruising revs and i find it very satisfiying just flicking the little switch.......<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
i may have an o/d gear lever+knob if you get stuck.not sure if the switch is there tho
also have new clutch friction+pressure plate bought in error as my 1300 is a late one fitted with the 1500 clutch.DOH!
