Bets place to source a recon gear box?

#1 Post by AndyS » Mon Mar 08, 2004 11:02 am

Hi guys,

looks like I'm going to have to replace or rebuild the gearbox on Milly. Any ideas where to buy a box or have one re-built?

cheers
Andy

3-rail?

If the gears themselves aren't worn, you'd probably save money by getting the service kit as advertised on e-bay - bearingsuk have been flogging them and they've gone for around £35-£40, so maybe a saving there...

(PS-not related to them in any way - was lokoing to redo my box..) Won't bid against you!!
I spoke to Total Triumph and they recommended Canley......Funny, I mentioned Robbers and he says.."Thats a swear word around here laddy!" <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Are they good rebuilds at Canley? can they be trusted?

I'd have a go at a re-build but I just haven't got the time atm. Apart from the dolly, I've got an Xr2 I'm restoring and I might be having that Sprint on Ebay going for £60.

I'm going to have ago at removing the gear box. The last time I removed any kind of gearbox was15 years ago when I was more supple! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

What would I need? I've got a set of ramps (which is all I used last time), will that suffice? What problems could I encounter?

What sort of Dolly

The Sprint box wont come out from inside. The others all will. But now Ive got a good crane its easier taking lump and box out together in all cases cos fiddling around with the tunnel and shelf I think is a PITA.
It's a Sprint.

Won't the box drop from underneath using the clearance of the ramps?

Sprint Box Out

#8 Post by Malc » Mon Mar 08, 2004 10:13 pm

Haul the whole lump out (engine & Box) in one go, getting a Sprint box out from below is a B*#"$%! of a job. Back in my 18 Y'old youf, some mechs had a Sprint in our Service Center, they already had seat and interior out when yours truly piped up "Clutch Chaps" you won't get the box out that way. Chief Mech (Dewhusrt we called him, Master Butcher) told me politely where to go. 2/3rd of a day later I returned, they had rear subframe hanging down and the car virtually dismatled and box still wasn't out. Shame really, cos you can have the lot out in about 45 Mins. It might sound like more work, but in the end it is much easier <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">
I've dropped quite a few out from underneath just on ramps. You will need to undo the rear engine mountings as mentioned & take the tunnel off. Have a jack or hoist on the engine. Take 2 of the bolts holding the cross member (1 either side) & loosen the other 2. Then when all the other bolts are out around the bell housing, lay under the g/box, put your knees under the X member, undo the other 2 bolts, mind the fuel line when lowering. Riggle the g/box 'till it comes free (have a breather) lower g/box gently on to chest. Wriggle to one side & lower the g/box to the floor. Replace g/box is reversal of this except it's a b***er to line up the splines. ATTEMPT THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Thats how I used to remove MK2 boxes....

It seems a hell of a lot of grief to do it from below.....I think I'll pass! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":">

It's sad really, my Bro in law's garage won't have her back (they did a rear crank oil seal) as it takes too long so I'm going to have to look for another garage. Garages these days....I dunno.

Well I've spoken to a very nice fella at Canley and although they haven't got one in stock, he's gonna build me a nice new 'un! (fingers crossed)

There is me thinking I'll be able to get my fingers dirty again. Jeeez the only think I've done is a service and put my anti rust gadget on! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

Betta get a Mk2 to play with!
