.....the hard way!

When I bought KDU last year its o/d was inoperative. Not used it much, but a few purchases this weekend meant the old trailer came out, hooked up to KDU and off we go.

Never got around to looking into the o/d save for pulling the switch off and checking the wires.

Today, start getting a bit of a whine in the car, 20 miles from home and a trailer full of engine gearbox axle etc etc, so eased off and carried on gently. Whine gets worse, mainly in second (now like a banshee), but also there in first and third but not fouth.

That'll be the layshaft then.

That'll be no oil in the gearbox then.

Diagnosis complete: overdrive inoperative due to insufficient oil pressure.

Easy.

Now all I have to do is strip it down, get a new gearbox case and flush all the swarf out of the overdrive.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/sick.gif ALT=":x">

O/d diagnosis....
O/D Ohh Dear or Oil Drained
<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> Depending on how loud the Bansheee was, you could refill, whack a magnetic sump plug in it, run for a few miles, drain and refill.

O/D diagnosis
I have stripped and rebuilt a couple of O/D gearboxes but I have never attempted to completely strip an O/D unit because the Haynes manual keeps making reference to needing special tools.

However I have ventured to take the sump plate off and this gave access to the sump filter and with a bit more work the pressure filter. I consider the work was well worth the effort as I was able to clean debris from both of these filters.

You need to get a replacement sump gasket to do this work but I think it is something that you might like to consider doing. What do the experts think ?

Can the experts out there advise - do you need the special tools to strip and get the unit back together as I have a unit that is noisy so I am assuming the bearings need replacing.

Oh I have done one other job on an O/D unit that was to replace the rear oil seal.
o/d
you can strip most of the o/d but you do require special tools to get at the pistons etc. clutches and so on can be done whithout any need for special tools some years since i've done one though have some kicking around though
