refitting 1500tc gearbox

#1 Post by Paul » Tue Apr 13, 2004 8:13 pm

im having trouble getting my gearbox in, im doing it from inside of the car.

im pretty sure its just because the clutch isnt aligned, but i dont have an aligning tool or the right size allen key.

what is the imperial size just a little smaller than 5mm?

should the gearbox go in easily with the clutch aligned or is there a trick to it?

thanks, Paul

If your clutch is misaligned you will encounter problems as the input shaft in the gear box passes through the driven plate on splines and then locates into a spiggot bush in the end of the crankshaft. If the two aren't co-axial then its a no go. You can use a suitably sized dowel to get it near enough....

When lining the 'box up, put it in a gear and rotate the output flange gently as you are unlikely to have the splines perfectly matched to the clutch at first attempt.

Do you still want the workshop manual I have?

TC Box

#3 Post by Silvery » Tue Apr 13, 2004 9:56 pm

I had a bit of trouble getting the engine back on the box when I took it out intending to fit it to the auto last year. Not as much trouble as I had getting the bloody auto's engine to fit back in though!

I popped to the local rip off motor factors and got a blue plastic thing with Draper written on it, faffed about with it, and then worked on the basis it looked about right. Then slid the engine onto the box (box was in car, so opposite of what you're doing by the sounds of it). It stuck with about an inch to go. Wiggled it a bit, it pretty much slid all the way home.

Maybe it was the plastic thing that did the trick, or just me getting very annoyed and wellying the thing on, but it went! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">
And I haven't had chance to drive the car properly since (still need to save up for a generator and weld the wings, rear arch, sill, etc), but driving it around the space infront of the garage it didn't show any signs of judder or anything.

I was glad I'd popped the engine out in the end, as the clutch plate was knackered - Plenty of meat left on it, but one of the springs had come loose, and was grinding the heads off the flywheel bolts. Got a new plate for 15 quid from the local place as they didn't know what it was, and couldn't find it on the system to price it properly <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Even with....

the clutch plate aligned with a spare input shaft its sometimes hard to get the 2 bits to line up. If you get it within an inch and it wont go in its the spigot bush. The splines will have picked up and you can tell this cos the box if in gear wont turn round any more, well it will but try to turn the flywheel. Get some long studs diametrically opposed and try and get the box as square as possible to the end plate. If you can get as many as 4 long bolts in evenly spaced circumferentially thats great...then just pull the box on by doing up the bolts evenly a bit at a time. Eventually it will pop together.
gearbox refitting

#5 Post by Paul » Wed Apr 14, 2004 7:26 pm

thanks for the relpies,

i will line up the cluch with the old input shaft, put it in gear so i can turn the input shaft and use four long bolts to pull it together. it sounds like a better plan than brute force and swearing.

before i have another go at it, is there anywhere i can get a clutch kit from cheaper than fittchets at £75? i removed the gearbox to replace it with a second hand 'box that came with the car.

alun i will email you in a few minutes.

Thanks, Paul

1500 clutch

#7 Post by Matt Cotton » Wed Apr 14, 2004 8:57 pm

Try Quiller Triumph (0208 854 4777)

I have just replaced the clutch on my 1500 and purchased a 3 piece clutch kit from them at £51.00 £12.90 p p.

I have bought many bits from them recently and find them to be very efficient and reasonably priced.

I too had problems getting the clutch plate and g'box to mate properly. I first tried doing it 'by eye' as my mate said it always worked for him. In the end I used the input shaft from my old box (non - o/d) to align it properly and hey presto!

You get....

what you pay for. Ther are some variable quality clutches for these being common to Spits and Midgets which do get through clutches at a fair old rate owing to boy racer owners.
Fitchetts will sell you a decent one...may even be NOS AP or Borg and Beck. Quillers will sell you what they have...which could be Moprod...
Nuff said.
I bought in an AP cover from Moss at 35 quid recently
Clutch kit

The kit Quiller supplied to me was a Borg & Beck. Pretty highly regarded in the trade i'm told.

was what you had there then Matt....
IME Valeo make the most shite clutch bits....
The one in my Landy fell apart with no warning...one minute drive...then next nothing. When I had it all off the centre splined bit hadr partyed cmpany with the outer disk. Can only put that down to build quality cos I know how I drive...
I have used Moprod ones from Maccess etc BTW and they are okay but do burn out after 30k or so in a Spit.
The B n B one in My dolly is about sixty k up and still strong.
gearbox

#12 Post by Paul » Sun Apr 18, 2004 1:41 pm

thanks for all the help, the gearbox is fitted but its no good, it has nearly as much bearing noise as the old 'box with an added rattle.

it is also difficult to select any gear, i think its the clutch rather than a problem with the gearbox.

has anybody got a good, cheap gearbox for sale? if not i will rebuild the old gearbox.

Thanks, Paul
