Gearbox Problem
My gearbox was completely reconned in 1996 by one of the past owners have a bill for alot of money <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :eek --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> <br>

now the gearbox REALLY has started to wine.. its very loud <br>
<br>
when its sat in nutral its like a kinda rumbleing noise. which go's away when i push the clutch in and you hear the noise spin down. comes back soon as clutch is up. <br>
<br>
it wines in all gears and its very noticeable.<br>
<br>
what do you think could be the problem with the box? <br>
<br>
layshaft? <br>

if so would be be more easy to get a new box or try and fix this one?<br>

a interesting point is i topped up the oil right up and the box made alot less noise.. but soon as the car was upto temp and i had driven the car a bit.. the noise was back loud as ever? <br>

Possibly clutch release bearing ?

i thought if it was a release bearing the noise would be there if the clutch was up or down? <br>

Not release bearing
It`s only going to be the release bearing if you have your foot on the clutch as that`s when it comes in to contact with the pressure plate. I would say it`s either first motion shaft or layshaft bearings.

I disagree; release bearing noise is evident when your foot is off the clutch. Layshaft bearing noise is only evident in 1, 2 and 3 and goes away in 4.<br>

Its...
almost certainly the layshaft bearings. See previous threads on this subject....<br>
It wont go away and will only get worse. If its less noisy in top then the intermediates then that is no surprise. The layshaft goes round when ever the clutch is engaged...even in neutral...so if it gioes away with the clucth down...thats it.<br>
Box rebuild is the ony way. Be careful where you get the bits...cheaper to get an exchange box from canley classics time you add up the bits and labour.<br>

I have a good s/h 'box....
.....but I maintain its NOT the layshaft bearings; had these go on my TR6 and the noise disappears altogether when in fourth (direct drive). I didn't change the 'box on that until the noise was unbearable and folk stared at my car when I went passed - had to change the case as the wear was that bad, but still no noise in 4th.<br>

Good reason for that...
The SPrint box has seperate lay gears. The single rail dolly box has a solid countershaft so it all rotates all the time. The Sprint otoh has a seprate bush for each lay gear, only some of which may be shot....usually the second gear one. The smaller boxes layshaft runs on 2 sets of needle rollers. They will be worn and may be damaging the inside surface of the laygear cluster...which is extermely expensive on an 1850. If you catch it quick damage may be confined to the pin which is cheap. It may be a bit less noisy in top but if you hear a rushing sound when the clutch is up on a single rail or 3 rail early dolly box come to that...its the layshaft.<br>

when i filled it up with oil the noise stopped and got alot more quiet for about 2 miles. then it was back<br>

when i get the gearbox out the car i will have a look too see if its leaking<br>

Dry bearing
If you spin the bearing and it carries on spinning, it's dry. Any grease that was in the bearing has gone. You should be able to rotate it but not spin it.
