How the H do I get this clutch slave out

#1 Post by David6214 » Sun Jul 30, 2006 1:04 am

So I notice that the clutch resevoir is a little low (its empty, and I can't select a gear) and work out that the slave has gone. I've disconnected the two bolts (its on a sprint) and taken out the split pin. The hose is off (and the bleed nipple, so I can get to it from underneath). I have a spare gearbox that I have robbed a slave from....but I can't get the broken slave out of the bracket. I will probably just remove the bracket but it seems strange that I can't get the slave out, Has any one else had this problem?

This may look like a late posting, but I have just shut up shop from trying to fix it!
Are you saying the slave will not move at all or you can't get it free enough to pull right out?. If it will not move at all and you have disconnected the rod and both fixing bolts i would suggest it has perhaps rusted in the bracket. Have you tried tapping it to loosen it.
Thanks Mike, I've managed it now.

The clutch arm was bent, so the cyclinder, whilst loose in the bracket, would not come out. so the 'simplest' thing was to take out the parcel shelf, heater vents, radio, front carpets, gearstick trim, gearbox tunnel / cover and take the bracket off with the cylinder still in it!

Might as well swap the parcel shelf for a better one and change the radio whilst its out....
So I change the clutch slave cylinder but the car still doesn't go into gear. Is there a good way to tell if it is the clutch itself that is gone, before I take the gearbox out and replace it anyway...?

Clutch plate will be stuck to the flywheel. Warm the car up in neutral, stop engine, select second year, depress clutch pedal with handbrake and footbrake applied, start car, BANG. Sorted.
Hi Jod.

Can this happen with a recently used car?

I drove the car 100 miles the day before, and 5 miles out, followed by the 5 miles home the next day. Couldn't select a gear 20 feet from home (which was lucky) noticed the fluid was gone and the saga started from there. I have had sticky clutches (on other cars) but only when they have been standing for a while.

Ah, in that case its unlikely to be a stuck plate. My guess is that the pivot thingy that carries the release bearing is at fault here. Whatever, I reckon its time to pull the engine out and have a proper look.
I had a quick look - I think I might be time to take something big out. I reckon take the prop out, then the tunnel, and remove the gearbox through the car.

Does the 'pivot thing' go often then?

Down is easier then through the car, it has to go down before it can come up anyway. Get it up on good tall axle stands at the front and remove the top cover / extension. Drop it and slide out under the engine. You don't need to remove the prop either, just release the front end. An engine support is a very handy tool for this job.
Before....

you get too far make sure the clutch is bled properly.
IIRC on a Sprint its possible top have inlet and bleed screw such that the last bubble wont come out.
As its all out you shopuld be able to see the salve doing its stuff and it should feel right.
Sprint clutch arms do give trouble....snapped wedglock pins can mean the release shaft rotates and the bearing carrier does very little. Or the arm at the end can come adrift from the shaft and need welding back on.
Ive had all three problems.
If you need to take it all out do it engine and box together.
Hi Jonners. Thanks for the advice. I should have waited before I got all impetuous and took the box out. Took it out through the car as well. So there is a gaping hole in the footwell, I'm ready to chuck a spare in it. Why do you suggest the box and engine should come out together?

You took a Sprint g/box out from inside the car? Does it have o/d? I didn't think it was possible. I suppose if you don't have ramps or axle stands that would be the best way to do it.

The box usually wont come past the exhaust manifold very easilly and the hole edges tend to suffer a bit so your tunnel may not reseal...
I have done it this way but decided that crainng the whole lot out was a lot easier.
The hole edges were fine. The car was a foot off the ground all round and the exhaust has been replaced with a stainless steel one that I did not move. Slid the gearbox back to disengage, then lowered it on blocks and jacks. Awkward to get it through the car though.

I have a crane, so will try it that way next time. I have another sprint that needs an engine change (big ends are gone) so although I have already split the engine and box and taken the engine out, I have now taken the box out as well. I'll mate the two together on the floor and put the lot back in together. It must have to go in at a bit of a funny angle though......Seems that after all this, I may not get the bleeding the clutch right again. Still its been pretty good fun, and the wife is learning which spanners are which!

And then

with the gearbox off, I checked the clutch - or I would have done if I could have got the nuts off (2 obstinate ones). I put it all back together with the gearbox from another sprint, sealed it with dum dum - thanks Justyn - and its fine except...the release bearing whines and there is a funny rattle from underneath...still it managed 15 miles ok tonight - an achievement for one of my cars1
