Jumping out of 3rd gear

#1 Post by iandollysprint » Thu Aug 31, 2006 1:15 pm

My Sprint keeps jumping out of 3rd gear on overun.

Also 2nd is more difficult to engage than any other gear and 3rd to 4th crunches if I take it fairly quickly. Looking to have an exchange gearbox unit from TD Fitchett (£175 inc VAT) which seems reasonable.

Will this solve my jumoing out of 3rd gear though? TD Fitchett commented that it may be the selector mechanism which is not included in the gearbox rebuild.
Thanks

likley to be internal rather than selectors
the 3/4 syncro hub and baulk rings is the suspect area your looking at as it's coming out on over run

I'd stay away from those re-CON boxes, I know the bloke that builds them. Mark-up on his supplied price is in the order of 110 quids, leaving not much left for doing the job right
Gearbox rebuild

Thanks for the advice. I really am considering having mine rebuilt as it only has 62k miles on it and I just don't know what I would get from a recon box. Any suggestions on who could rebuild my sprint box for me?
I know it may cost more than the 175 quoted by Fitchetts but I want this job doing correctly.
Mike Papworth does box rebuilds, but I can't comment on the quality as I've never had one done. His details are on the suppliers section of the website. Also Carl Shakespeare mentioned having a box rebuilt. Carl are you listening?
Jumpimg out of 3rd Gear

Mainshaft circlip, which retains the 2nd/3rd gears has either broken or worn. If there is excessive movement in these gears, the gearbox will ALWAYS jump out of 3rd gear.

Papworth used to do the Canley 'boxes. Apparently knows his stuff and could probably do you an exchange off the shelf.
