How long is your gearbox input shaft? 1850/1500 differences
The input shaft on 1500 Overdrive boxes to be specific. Q1. How long is is from the front of the box to the splined end.<br>
Q2. How many splines on a 1500 input shaft TKC1267.<br>
Q3. I assuem cos an 1850 input shaft is TKC1268 it has a diff number of splines or is a different length.<br>

Any other ways to tell if an OD box is from an 1850 or a 1500?<br>

1850 input shaft is considerably longer, but I can't tell you by how much coz my gearboxes have been evicted from the front room.<br>

Only way...
is to tell by the number of turns on 1st gear. If you dont have a bellhousing that is...<br>
1850 input shafts come in two sorts depending on the clutch spline count. I think the change came when moving to single rail box...but as the shafts are actually interchangeable and the sngle rail box bell housing is the same as a 3 rail one...<br>
1500 ones also come in 2 sorts...depending on the type of oil seal on the front pinion. If you have the wrong sort the bellhousing wont fit over the shaft...which is damn irritating I can tell you.<br>
There is no guarantee on numbers either. The stamping only applies to how it came out of the factory...Noone knows how many times its been reconditioned or what gear sets were put in since.... ...You could even have marina ones. Tee hee Ive got a Spit box casing that now has a TR7 set within and overdrive on the back.<br>
So look in the book and look at the ratios...put box in 1st gear and count the number of ins and outs<br>
You cant mix n match input shafts...they have to go with the gear set and laygear. In addition Canley classics do a special input shaft that lets a Spit 1500 use a TR7/Dolly gear set. I hope you havent got one of them... I think they come form a GT6 3 rail but I'm not sure.<br>
Its all good fun isnt it....<br>

Protruding shaft
Did a sketch of the ital and 1500 input shafts last year. <br>
<br>
The 1500 is approx 5 13/16 inches from circlip to end<br>
The ital/marina single rail was approx 6 7/8.<br>
<br>
The 1500 has 16 teeth and the ital/marina has 17 both 20 spline with 24 tooth synchro.<br>
<br>
As an aside I was chatting to the guy at Canley classics who did the recon gearboxes and if I understood him correctly he suggested that you could swap scroll and oil seal type input shafts on the 1500 as long as you swapped the cover ie. you didn't need the whole bell housing. Anyone know if this is correct?<br>

Looking at the parts book, the G'box case is the same part no (RKC461) irrespetive of O/D or Non O/D. The Dolly parts book lists<br>

Ive had 1500's with the oil seal type of box from the factory.<br>
Its an early late issue...and I just take each box as I find it now, Dont order bits til ya know....<br>
