Clutch problems (judder)

#1 Post by Kehoemj » Wed Feb 11, 2004 2:11 pm

Problem: My car judders when engaging in first or reverse gears. It is fine once moving & all other gear changes including overdrive are fine. I assume there is something wrong with the clutch, but not sure exactly what or were to start looking.<br>
<br>
History: The gear box has an oil leak, not major & has not effected the overdrive. The clutch as far as I am aware has never been replaced or tinkered with in any way.<br>
<br>
I intend to remove the gear box & replace all the gaskets & oil seals to solve the leak. While the gear box is out I want to find out what is wrong with the clutch.<br>
<br>
The problems I am aware of are:<br>
1. Oil on the clutch from the gear box leak.<br>
2. Master cylinder or slave cylinder leaking.<br>
3. Wear on the operating rods.<br>
4. Clutch just worn out.<br>
<br>
Can anybody help. I need to know how to identify & resolve the above problems. Also need to know if there are any other reasons for the juddering. Any assistance will be much appreciated.

Clutch judder

Check your engine and gearbox mounts. They might be soft or splitting due to oil contamination.

- Excess crank shaft end float?<br>
- one of more bent pressure plate fingers?<br>

judder

Have you looked at your prop shaft joints? these can cause a judder when taking up drive even loose bolts to diff or gearbox, if those are ok the damper springs in the friction disk could be weak, While looking at the prop check the centre bearing and exhaust for touching the body, My 1500 had the same problem but the clutch burnt itself out at the weekend i am taking the engine out tomorrow and will report back on any weekness

KDU does this too, particularly if you are slow about the bite point. I haven't had a spare dry weekend (or the inclination) to investigate yet so I will wait for a possible armchair solution.<br>

Hark at me, there was a time when I would have repaired her in the rain, after midnight on a Wednesday night so as to avoid using the bus to work on a Thursday morning. Shame on me!!

But back then you had to do the job at that hour in those conditions in order to get to work. Now I assume you have alternative transport so you can do the work when you choose because you want to not because you have to.<br>
<br>
You are chiding yourself for a percieved decrease in dedication when in fact you should be congratulating yourself. Why do you bother getting up your elbows in grease just to keep your dolly usable when you've got a perfectly servicable (probably far more serviceable, comfortable etc) alternative means of transport available? Why do you keep speding the money and the time? Because you choose to. Well done that man!

Centre Bearing

#7 Post by Malc » Thu Feb 12, 2004 7:12 pm

Check the Prop Centre Bearing. The rubber thingy in the middle. These break up and contribute to clutch judder. Alan Clarke replaced subframe mounts & loads of other gear on his sprint, no difference. Failed MOT on this centre bearing, had new one fitted, jobs a good un, no more judder <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START ;) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

Clutch Probs

#9 Post by Silvery » Fri Feb 13, 2004 2:34 am

The clutch plate on my TC was making some odd noises.. When i came to take the engine out, I saw the springs had worked loose, and were rubbing against the flywheel bolts (one of which was very badly gouged out).<br>
<br>
Plate itself had plenty of meat on it though.<br>
<br>
Thankfully the local rip off motor factors had one in stock, but not listed on the system at all, so I got it cheap <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->
