propshaft centre bearing 1850hl
propshaft centre bearing 1850hl
hi, im new to the dolly club, not received my membership number yet but thought i could join in a discussion. i have recently acquired a lovely 1850hl but have noticed a rubbing sound underneath towards the back, upon looking i noticed the propshaft bearing rubber was split and wearing thin. Is there any easy fix for this as i have found the part is hard to come by, any suggestions would be helpful, thanks, proud owner, martin.

Re: propshaft 1850hl
Hi Martin, and welcome to the club.

Your problem as described is unfortunately not that rare. Myself and Ben spent a large part of one sunday at Stoneleigh looking for a new bearing and rubber for his sprint. His had gone exactly the way you describe.

There was an article in a not so long ago Dolly Mixture by John Abra where he described how he had his sprint one repaired by a propshaft company in Brum if i remember correctly. I am pretty sure that you can ask for back issues, maybe this would be some help to you. I think he got proffesionals to rebuild it, because it's something that needs a quite large press. They did offer a "rebuild by mail", but obviously this may cost more. Maybe it would be cheaper to buy a new propshaft? Not sure either....options options, options...

Hope this helps.

1850hl propshaft
thanks for the tips on back issues, at the moment i only have issue 112. i will try and get more. i have looked on ebay and they have a propshaft bearing for dolomite/morris marina/sherpa is that a feasable option to go for or is it best left to the experts? i dont want to damage my dolly. thanks for responding so quick too! nearly blew me away when i saw a response. martin.

Classic case...
of a part common to lots of vehicles being sold as rare and for classics only...
Its the same bit as used on sherpa vans IIRC. Dont pay more than 25 quid.

I tried to do one last week...second time Ive done one in 30 years of running them. I gave up cos the splines between the 2 halves have so far defeated attempts to seperate them. The last one I did was much more cooperative and came away with a few taps. The bearing then comes off fairly easilly. Being short of time I just put on another prop that just needed a u/j.

Get the parts you need first...bearing and at least one u/j cos you will need it, remove the prop shaft for which you will need 1 half inch socket and 2 good quality 9/16 spanners and get it off. Try and seperate and if you are lucky fine...make sure you mark the 2 halves so they go back on exactly the same spline. If it wont seperate then take it to your local back street garage with an old mechanic.
Ive got one locally who did his apprenticeship on Triumphs...25 quid for a u/j swap.
Re: Classic case...
I needed heat to do mine, lots of heat which melted the rubbers on the UJ, so, as Jonners says get a joint to, you`ll need it if you have to apply heat.

Re: Classic case...
In the DM article didn't John Abra find that a Transit bearing was an exact fit (and cheap and available)?
Or am I mad (quite likely)?

Re: Classic case...
I think that was the Sprint propshaft, which has a sliding centre bearing.

I think....
you mean a sliding centre CV joint as aoppsed to a hardy spicer.

The bearing is the same...unless I'm mistaken.
I have managed to aquire a propshaft centre bearing, i phoned loads of companies form the mag and finally came up trumps, with postage 34.06, so not too far off the mark from soc autoparts.
