strange electrical problem [lights]

#1 Post by knightrider150 » Mon May 03, 2004 10:24 am

i was driving home last night with all main beams on and for what ever reason i flicked them off

when i went to put the main beams on again (pushing the stalk towards the dash) ALL my lights cut out <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

however... dipp on its own works ......and main beam works when you flick the stalk towards you..

seems strange it happened so fast <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o">

any ideas lads?
Probably ...

a burnt out or dirty contact in the column switch. Take off the cowling and you should see how it all works. IIRC its the top contact as you look at the switch in situ from above.
As I read your post you said the main beams went when you went from main to dip and then back again....
The Dips dont stay on....they use a different filament in the outer light so if you switched back to main and the contact was burned out...you'd have zilch for lights. The flasher works the mains through a different circuit.
This problem is due to a broken copper strip in the switch unit. I had the same problem on my Toledo and it was possible to solder the crack in the copper strip. If you remove the switch the copper strip is under the stalk if I remember correctly.

If yours is dead and beyond repair, the ones fitted to landrovers is identical, bar the end of the stick... the main thing is, you can get them for about £15 new... as opposed to £60 ish from certain outlets.

If anyone knows where Triumph ones can be obtained from for better prices....
