intermittent temp. gauge fault

I got in the car this morning, and the temperature gauge wasn't working. I drove into town, and then it started working. I looked down again, and it was back to nothing. <br>
<br>
Everything else electrical works properly, so I'm at a loss. Given my utter lack of competence with a multimeter, I haven't got the foggiest idea where I should start looking. Any ideas?
