Source for Strange Terminal on Battery Cable

I need to replace my positive battery cable. However there is a terminla crimped to the cable, about 8 inches from where it attaches to the battery. This terminal has wires which appear to feed the fuse box and alternator.<br>

Does anyone know where I can get a new one, or anyone have an old one that can be cut off an old cable?<br>

Well that looks nice and reliable nowhere for the corrosion to creep in. If you are handy with wire and terminals you can just make up new leads using a mutiblock connector.(solder type not screw in) OR<br>
take the pic to your local independent auto electrian and he/she should be able to supply you with the correctly rated bits.<br>

Connectors like that, in my mind are on par with 'scotch locks' and good for one place only, my friend... In deee bin mate. In fact, I'd be happier chopping the terminals off the end, twisting them round the battery cable and plastering it all up with insulating tape!! <br>

I'd use slightly bigger cross section cable (the copper, not the insulation!), finer stranded stuff (more flexible) and maybe stick in an insulated stud terminal. Re-crimp the cables with ring terminals to suit the stud (id use about M8 ) , dont forget the heat shrink, and make the take off to the fuse box via the stud.<br>

While you're at it, throw the old fuse box away, and get a nice shiny new one with blade fuses, and BEHOLD... the opportunity to isolate some circuits nicely and neatly!!! HOOO RAAA for nice wiring!!!<br>

but again, thats just me, and im nuts...<br>

I completly agree with the scoth lock thing.. a major cause dodgy wiring and the odd fire.<br>

You're right...I am in Denver, Colorado USA.<br>

This "Connector" is original equipment (it appears) and is stamped with LUCAS, Made in England. If the rest of you don't have this connector, how do those 4 thick brown wires get their positive feed from the battery?<br>

Harry - that terminal is O. E. however tapping into a wire like that is not good practice. I'd guess battery cables were made up like that because it's quicker and cheaper to do it like that. <br>

To simplify my suggestion, what I was getting at was basically make up the battery cable in 2 parts, with a stud that is obviously insulated from the shell, conveniently located in the engine bay, away from risk of getting plastered in dirt/grime. terminate the ends of the battery cable, and also those brown wires to fit the stud, and VOILA, nicely engineered solution. <br>

(im not really nuts, 2 years at college studying electrical/electronic engineering and 10 years designing electrical distribution systems for boats, special vehicles, and obscure standby power systems, and I just like things done 'properly'!)<br>

of course if you're going to make it a proper hard-tail, you should also remove the rear shox and replace them with some RSJ's, or the cheaper version would be to modify the posts from some old axle stands and weld those in. you know it makes sense! go on, get it done!<br>

i can be serious from time to time, although it doesnt happen very often... coming from an electrical background, wiring things just bug me. <br>

Ive NEVER had a problem with that battery cable arrangement...even on cars that have stood in grass for years. It must be the States that does it...all that fossil fuel residue, acid rain and the dreaded denver brown cloud...<br>
Now the fuse box is a different story and is well up there with my favourite crap dolomite features...<br>
I feel a new thread coming on....<br>
